Gateway P-7805u weak wifi reception

i recently bought a used Gateway P-7805u fx in good condition. i have a very weak wireless reception however. i must have the patop within 2 feet from the router. i have another laptop which fins the network within about 50 feet so its the gateway that has a reception issue. i have the newest wifi 5100 driver but have an outdated marvell yukon ethernet driver. does this affect wifi reception??? i cannot seem to find the yukon driver and driver detektive wont do it for me unless i pay. is there any similar freeware which installs drivers for u???? I have windows vista 64bit home premium. if i had a faulty driver woudnt it just not work at all rather than having a very weak reception. could i replace my wireless network card??? is this software related??? I would be very thankfullif anyone could help me. i do not have any cd with drivers on.

The P-7805u stock should not give you any issues with wifi reception and connection.

How is the state of the software configuration on this used unit? You migh want to review and perform some clean up first and see.

Updating the drivers, using the ones from Gateway Support is not a bad idea either.

i have reset the computer and installed the drivers and still the same problem. very weak reception. Is it possible to change the wifi or network card on the gateway p-7805u fx??? if so how much would such a card cost?? I have found quite many and am pretty confused. Could someone please just recommend one that would work with regular wireless networks.(At least as good as the stock one should have been)

Is this comp being opened before? I just can't see that it is hardware related unless someone messes with the inside somehow before.

Sure you can replace the Wifi card as you please.

well as i said i got it used, and it has maybe been a subject to trauma or maybe its just a lemon. I doubt its software since i can get reception but very very week. as i posted above i lose about a bar of connection per foot away from the router. so that gives me a maximum of 5 foot range which is ridiculos. It does however function flawlessly within this range. So i think its just weak hardware. Can i put any wifi card or must it be a speacial compatible with my laptop one.?? any good suggested cards would be nice

Any Wifi cards that fit the specifications will do. I have no personal preference on internal wireless card :-)

If you are so keen about opening it up, you might just want to take a look at the internal antenna cables first.

yea, i just did, the card seems to be plugged in but there are 2 cables next to it none of them are plugged in. On the card there are two pluggs. they are numbered 1 and 2. The cables seemm to be meant to be connected but do however not indicate to which one. any ideas??? one is black and the other white.

Try the black to 1, the other to 2 and see. If not swap them around. You are getting close.
