When you have a laptop is it best to start a fresh copy of Windows XP and just install programs you will use or is it best to use the recovery cd's and install all of the preinstalled programs that came with the laptop and then you install your the games or programs you use?

If it is an used notebook, I would go fresh. Saying that, many special apps can only be found on the recovery CD/DVD

Moved to Software.

Well this is not a used computer. But what I was saying is that to format everything and then use the recovery cd's to install all of the preinstalled software or just install windows xp it self without using the recovery cd's so it just have what ever windows xp has.

With all my new comps, no exception so far, I just disable all un-needed 3rd party applications and use them as such.

Many users would want to go from scratch, installing OS anew. Recovery CDs/DVDs are only for emergency since it would put your system back as it was.

So you are saying it's best to install the retail copy of windows xp and not use the cd's like the recovery cd's to install the windows xp that is has and all of the preinstalled software?

If you want (and must) to go the clean way - yes.

When you say clean way you mean use the retail copy of Windows XP?

Clean = just the OS fresh. How you get there does not matter as long as you can activated the installation.

May I ask why it's not best to install all the of preinstalled software that came with this notebook I have? Will it make it slow or is it not best to have the programs?

Nothing bad about the extra apps that come with the computer as mentioned above.

Question is then why do you want a re-installation with a comp that you just received? Is this pre-owned? If yes, then sure, go for it, re-install (recover) it to its original state, OS and apps and everything.

The reason why I was asking is since I had this notebook for long time and I thought I needed to start over and make it like new again. That's why I was asking if I sould just get a retail version of XP or use the recovery cd's and install it back to how it was when I bought this notebook. This notebook is 7 years old and I thought it's about time to start over.

I see. I would take the simple approach of reviewing your environment. Remove apps that you don't need. And a good defrag session would do you just fine.

hi,

Not sure if the advice is still needed but I've gone thru both scenarios and between installing a fresh copy of the OS (and the drivers to follow) and using the recovery disc, I'd use the recovery disc and just uninstall all the bloatware that came with the recovery cd. This minimizes the hit-miss chances of missing a driver or incorrectly installing it at the wrong sequence (some machines require a certain order of installing drivers). This is just my opinion though...

i would recommend the recovery portion. The laptop runs smoother with all the drivers installed correctly. & its a hassle trying to install 1 by 1 separately.

Actualy I already did a fresh copy of XP and it is running much faster. I just installed the drivers and each software and games that I use. There were alot of programs that I had before that I didn't even use that came with the notebook. I did had to download the drivers from esupport.sony.com.
