Sager NP9890 XP reinstall woes

Hey there,

I'm trying to reformat and reinstall XP on my NP9890, and no matter what I try XP refuses to recognize the HDD. I tried making and burning a custom XP disc with the ATA drivers included, but the machine still didn't recognize the HDD.

This seems to be the best place to go for advice on how I should go about reformatting my machine. Can any one help me out?

Thanks in advance.

Don't know much about the model, but see if can you turn off AHCI support in the BIOS setting?

ATA drivers, you meant S-ATA drivers, right?

Yeah - sorry I meant S-ATA (SATA378). I don't think I can change the AHCI in the BIOS, but I'll go take a look.

EDIT: Yeah - no go with turning of AHCI

Just thought I'd mention that the laptop does not have a floppy drive.

Did you use one of these instruction as how to slipstream the sata driver onto an XP disk?

Yeah - that's exactly what I did. I used nLite to put the SATA driver from the Driver CD on the custom XP install CD.

Ok, let us back up a bit. Why did you have to reformat and re-install XP? Error messages? System not working correctly? If so, how?

I think the machine has some malware or at worst a virus on it - so after trying to clean it up with AVG, SuperAntiSpyware and Malware Bytes and still having issues like Firefox refusing to open and my USP10.dll "being missing" preventing Google Chrome from opening (happens every time I reboot) I thought it would be easier to take a scorched earth approach and reformat the harddrive and reinstall XP.

Just putting in the XP disc has the machine failing to recognize the mass storage device, and even after slipstreaming the drivers on to a CD I still get the same message.

Is this prep XP CD from a retail copy or from some other OEM disk?

You mentioned that you do not see AHCI in your BIOS, what about "sata support" option? Do you have it? If so, disable it.

From the OEM Win XP disc that came with the laptop:
Midern Computer Inc. Recovery CD-ROM for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

So did you see the option to change SATA to IDE in your BIOS?

The only BIOS options I have is enabling either SATA or RAID.

Interesting. The CD you mentioned, as I interpreted it - is only for recovery, but not for a full installation (disk).

Do you have some sort of manual as how to use this disk? This is out of my area now, when it is getting to the very specific of this notebook.

Help? anyone else in the near? I would p.m. PC-Torque for some input as well, linking the thread in the message.

Thanks for trying qhn, maybe PC-Torque will have the answer (since I brought the laptop from them originally )

Give us a feedback (and tips) as how it turns out. Other NBF members will surely benefit from your work.

Sorry it took so long us to get back on this but I was consulting with a co-worker on this:

You need an ATA driver floppy diskette and USB floppy drive (must be TEAC or YEDATA brand, other brands have compatibility issues) in order to recognize the hard disk before setup XP.

Please see my attachment file for more information...

Thanks for the help - I did exactly as PC Torque suggested and got lucky when a co-worker just happened to have a TEAC USB floppy drive that I borrowed.

After that it was a breeze to reformat the harddrive and install XP. Hopefully I wont have to do this again, but at least my laptop is working as good as new
