Dell Outlet and M4400 Questions...

Hi all,

I'm looking to replace a 3-year old IBM X60s that recently failed.

I'm considering a refurbished M4400 from Dell Outlet, and I have a couple of questions:

1.) How is Dell Outlet service and what quality can I expect from them? I know from Lenovo Outlet, most of the refurbished items are actually in immaculate condition. Is that the case for Dell Outlet? Is customer service and shipping times good?

2.) When browsing through the available M4400s, I see listings for both 15.4" WXGA and 15.4" WXGA LED. Are there M4400s with CCFL backlit WXGA panels? When configuring a new one, the only option for WXGA is LED.

And any other comments, advice, warnings, etc, are welcome. Thanks for reading.

The Outlet usually indicates if it is a scratch and dent unit, but most have reported a nice unit from the outlet, some have had fairly sctrached up units.

You should have a return/exchange option with the laptop - confirm before you buy

As far as the screens go, the lastest is the LED versions.

If the screen resolution is the same I would go for the LED, but check carefully you may find the CCFL screens have a higher screen res.

I have bought several laptops from the outlet here in Canada and have been very happy with them.

Last you may want to consider adding the complete care warranty if the price is reasonable

Thanks for the response.

My question about the LCD may have been confusing: I would very much like to get an LED backlit LCD. I'm just wondering if every M4400 with a WXGA res LCD is in fact LED-backlit. On the Outlet descriptions, sometimes they call it "WXGA LED", but other times just "WXGA." Judging from the options on the configurator from Dell retail†, there is no option for a "WXGA CCFL," so do these two descriptions point at the same LED-backlit LCD?

As for screen resolution, I am looking for WXGA or WXGA+ (which are both offered on the M4400). I'm aware of the 1080p options on the M4400, but I don't think I'd find that high a resolution too comfortable on a 15.4" screen: I can always output to external for desktop real estate.

Also, is it possible to add an option to a refurb item? I.e., suppose I'd like a Bluetooth tranceiver but the machine I'm looking at didn't come with one.

I have thought about complete care, though haven't look specifically at Dell's policy. Is complete care the equivalent of accident/spill damage coverage?

If it does not say LED it is a CCFL display from what I have seen so far.

they do not always describe the "CCFL" on the regular displays but they do indicate if it s a LED display.

As far as adding things like bluetooth, not an option but it usually cheaper to add it yourself later. (memory, Hard Drives etc are over priced at Dell)

Complete care = Accidental / spill damage coverage including the display

The only thing not covered is the Battery unless you buy an extended coverage for it. otherwise its usually one year on the battery.
