19300 replacement - Studio 1737. questions

Thread Starter
Dell finally replaced my old system after 4MB replacements,3screen replacements,2 gpu replacements and a few other issues.

I love the new computer but have a few questions.

1) GPU. I received the ati 3650 replacing the 6800go. is the 3650 'better?' I checked on the internet and found that the 3650 only has 128m bit rate vs 256 for the 6800 go. Does this matter? the web had mixed results on this question(which is better). I like to play games and definately want to be able to play starcraft 2 when it is released on decent settings. I don't play any first person shooters.

2) can I put my old bluetooth card from the i9300 into this machiene? I believe the one I have is the 350.

3) I think my hard drive size is 250Gb. System shows: recovery partition size of 14.9GB and main partition of 217 gb. Where is the extra harddrive space? Does anyone know the maximum size hard drive this computer can take?

4) CPU - I have the intel t6600 2.2 GHz. Is this a decent processor? where does it fall in the scheme of processors for this computer? high, middle, low?

5) memory - how can I check the speed of my memory? I believe the FSB in this system is 800mhz. I want to make sure that I have memory that runs at least that fast and not 667 mhz.

Thanks in advance all!

1) Well, in all honesty, the ati 3650 is pretty even with the 6800 go even though its 128 vs 256 b. Most people on the forums complain about getting shafted with losing the 7900 gs in the older inspirons which in fact is better than several of the new gpus. I mean, just blizzard will make starcraft more than playable regardless of your graphics card, if you really want to argue, i would go with the 128 v 256, and the brand, ati vs nvidia. Honestly, its going to be a lot of hassle and probably wont be worth it for you.

2) As far as I know, all the new bluetooth modules are the 355 version. If they are backwards compatible I don't know, but if you want to research the 355 to see if your old one looks similar so it can fit, you can give it a try. (USB Bluetooth module could be an option if you want to buy something new).

3) well, 250 gb is the size they claim, but all hard drives give you less space. So you are losing a bit of space per gig. Thus, at 250 gb its quite a bit of space. also, the recovery partition is shared on that drive, so that cuts into your main partition. On top of that, dell loads a lot of bloatware with an already large sized operating system. so that is where all your space went.

4) great processor, compared to your pentium M (if i remember correctly) it is much better and a dual core. If you weigh this gain against the graphics card, it is a pretty reasonable replacement.

5) speed of the memory should be either found in the BIOS (F2 and startup) or device manager. (i think)

Good luck. I would be happy with the machine. But, if you had the next gen e1705 with a 7900 gs and got the studio 1737, i would be upset. be happy though, your warranty probably paid itself off with this replacement.

oh and most people have had luck (including myself) with complaining about the loss of a digital port (DVI). . .

dell has been having some trouble as of late with the economy and what not (ACER is surpassing them as #2!!!). so they might not do anything if you argue. or who knows they may want to keep a customer loyal, and help you out

The Studio laptop uses a PCie slot for the bluetooth, I do not beliee the 350 is compatible.

Benchmarks wise the cards look like this

6800 3dmark06 1900

HD 3650 3dmark06 3600

So it appears you do have a much faster systen with your new laptop.

Also I believe you can add a secind hard drive to your new laptop
