Good Partition size for Vista OS?

Hi there!

What's a good size for a partition for Vista (Home Premium) OS? I only have a small hard disc (a pitiful 120Gb) and I want to conserve enough data space as much as possible.

Would it easier just to leave the whole thing as is, and create a Data Folder (instead of data partition)?

This way OS gets what it needs, and you can always back up for data folder ("partition") as needed. No need to muck around with it when you only have 120gb.

cheers ...

Hi qhn,

I did give that a thought originally, problem is, well... we all eventually hit scenarios where windows crashes or needs to get re-installed. I don't really want to have to worry about trying to retrieve a folder in a system partition and would be better off just formatting the whole partition and reinstalling the OS.

With that in mind, I'm just after the minimum space requirement for Windows Vista (plus an additional 10% probably) to accommodate the space it needs in total...

Cheers!

Unless there is a total hard drive crash, to me the data folder access is just as easy as the data partition when come to retrieval or to restore from an external back-up.

I personally gives my Vista OS 80-100gig (if I must partition) to play with. Trying to read between the lines about the "minimum" disk space requirement and 10% is a bit "adventurous" and is asking for more system crashes ;-)

cheers ...

Thanks for the advice qhn, I'm just basing my objective on actual scenario where my OS crashed before and the fastest way for me to restore was to use the recovery disc and restore my OS to the "system" partition. The data drive/partition was still very much left intact and was not affected with the reinstall/recovery of the OS.

keep in mind Vista installer works differently than the XP installer. if you have to install a new copy of Windows, it will take the old Windows, Program Files, and Users folders and put them in a folder called Windows.old on the root, peserving your data (plus eating up a bunch of space so youd want to go take care of it later). you wouldn't have to format it, particularly

Thanks Conda,

Is this also the case with recovery discs? I can only do recoveries as I don't really have the Vista installer but rather a recovery disc from the notebook manufacturer.

that depends on what sort of disc the manufacturer made, what software they use to faclitate the recovery. some softare does keep the files, some doesnt.
