Pointers needed for choosing a gaming/college laptop

Thread Starter
Well here we go, I'm going off to college this year, and time to buy my first laptop. I've been a gamer for years, but I feel that there wont be that much space for my tower in my dorm room.

Here's the lowdown, I got about $2000, maybe a little more to spend on this thing. I'm looking for something that wont go obsolete in 3 months (yeah, that's a toughie hah), and be able to run games like Crysis or Fallout 3 at high/excellent settings. Something with a bigger screen (17") would be great, and I'm willing to deal with whatever weight it comes with. I know it's not necessarily practical for college, but I'm willing to pay the price for good gaming.

I was looking at the specifications of:
http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668248.php

Seemed like a great deal for the price, but it seems to have been discontinued. Now I'm looking for something with similar specs, but nothing in the price range seems to pop out.

Any suggestions, pointers and information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

You can take a look at the Asus G50/G51 series. Gateway mentioned that the P7808u is in "limited" supply. I am sure that you still can find these models at Best-Buys or Tiger Direct.

The Clevo M860ETU is another semi portable option to consider.

Though with these gaming notebooks you most certainly have to lunge the AC adaptor along to classes. Then you have got your books. Take your time choosing a comfortable bag.

For $2k some of those specs are right on the money. I haven't bought any Gateway laptops before, but on paper it looks pretty good. I would recommend that you include a bluray drive to go with it. You're going to want to watch bluray movies, IMHO .

cheers...

Check out this MSI729. Has Quad, much higher resolution screen is 17" like the Gateway. It has a HD4850m GPU. On par or better depending who you ask than the 9800m GS. Link.

You should still be able to find the Dell M1730 XPS which has a dual 8800GTX or 9800GT (Sli) this offers very high bang for buck when it comes to gaming performance and certainly under the 2K mark. If you prefer brick and mortar stores such as best buy then the gateway 7808u is a great buy if you can still find any.
