thanks

Nehalem may stay at the server platform while Sandy Bridge is released for the mobile segments, which would split the markets into two CPU lines.
so does that mean sandy bridge is only for notebooks (heralding the 8 cored laptop)??

Sandy bridge is definitely not only for mobile.

Title of this thread needs to be changed. How about the, "free association thread"?

OK we are talking or asking about the I7 Nelhalem's not going mobile (Calpella platform)? Wrong they are going, but asked are we going straight to Sandy Bridge (Huron River)? No we can't even get the mobile I7's out on time what makes you think Sandy bridge is the answer? They are not even projected until Q3 of 2010.

I am confused what I am even responding to? We still are in Q3 2009 so why are we talking Q3 2010? In Q3 2010 you will have more to talk about of Q3 2011. You will never buy or get anything because better is always around the corner. And Intel can't even deliver Nelahlem in Q3 2009, what make anyone think they will get back on schedule?

Notebooks will not have 8 cores Q3 2010 I guarantee. I doubt Q3 2011. Even if desktops do.

Get your head out of the clouds put your feet on the ground and deal with what is available or talk one generation above. Not two it is too far off to have value.

You guys win. You can come up with more questions than can possibly be answered at least by me.

I am not upset I am overwhelmed. I think the discussion is cool even if possibly off topic. I really had no angry bone when I posted. I still don't.

I liked your links I know more now than I did before. I did not even know about Sandy Bridge until you two started posting.

As said I am cool but just so much. I am still waiting for Nehalem not looking much further ahead.

Well sorry for misunderstanding you then Im personally waiting for Clarksfield as well but i doubt i will find it in the laptop models i am interested in so Arrandale is next but i would rather get a quad core so that leaves me with Sandy Bridge apparently! I'll just wait for my current laptop to stop working and then i won't have a choice so it will make my decision much simpler!

P.S: If you look around, you will find some photos of Clarksfield processors. Unfortuantely the high end one will cost more than 1000 dollars which is a real shame

I came up with what I wanted in "my next notebook" a couple years ago, and such a machine is still not in existence yet (i've got high demands). I suspect I'll be waiting for Intel's Sandy Bridge platform or AMD's long-anticipated Fusion platform before I buy my next notebook.

also @ powerpack, Sandy Bridge isn't the furthest out design plan Intel has. After Sandy Bridge comes out in 2011 or so (which Intel will claim is 2010 because they'll release it on New Year's Eve or something like that ), the next architecture revision down the line is called Haswell and can be expected around 2013 if Intel keeps to schedule.

darn you wikipedia and your slightly ambiguous article!!
i actually wanna segway into something else but ill leave it at this topic for now..
djembe, what DO you want into your next laptop anyways? i think we can you know...NOT talk about haswell for now...powerpack says 2 gen is too far away (which is true), 3 gen will be ever further. however i wont be too sprised if the high end laptops do make some 6/8 cored laptops (alienware/sager/asus) a year or 2 after the technology is made, heck look at the sager with the i7 in it.

Nuts! I am naming this thread "In need of advice of a future Notebook!"

cheers ...

Ideally, I'm looking for
  • 3 Ghz or higher quad-core CPU
  • DirectX 11 capable graphics card as powerful or more powerful than Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTX (mobile) and ATI Radeon HD 4670 (desktop)
  • 802.11n (official) wireless
  • USB 3.0
  • 4 hours battery life standard
  • no thicker than my current notebook (1.4")
  • modular bay
  • backlit keyboard
  • SSD
  • and generic stuff not technology-dependent, like a 14-15.x" screen with good viewing angles, high build quality, etc.
  • for $2000 or less
and while I'm not expecting all this stuff will be doable together by the time I really need to buy a new computer (I'm guessing around 2011 I'll really start looking around a lot, and possibly in 2010), I'm holding out for as much of it as I can get. So that's my crazy future list.

Djembe I really think that will be doable 2010/2011. Honestly I think the backlit keyboard with the rest might be the issue. That is not even a technical obstacle. It is more that backlit at this point is not widespread.

Little story. My notebook bought in 2008 for $1300. I read a 2006 review of an Alienware the fastest notebook at the time. $4000. My GPU comparable to it's my CPU walked on it's. Mine 14" AW 17".

Time does wonders with technology. Djembe start saving your money.

what exactly are these? the first i have no idea about the second i can only assume its regarding the usage of usb ports and what you stick in them?
802.11n is a standard for wireless connection. It is an improvement over previous standards such as "A", "B", and "G". It improves bandwidth and range. It is currently in use and sold in most current notebooks. Only thing is the standard has not been finalized yet. So for the most part they just have not had the meeting yet and voted on. Unless Djembie thinks some wicked improvement is about to come out he is just being a stickler for formalities.

USB 3.0 is what you think it is. An improvement on USB 2.0. 2.0 has a theoretical bandwidth 480Mb/s (never see real world) 3.0 has 4.8Gb/s will be much faster.
when you started mentioning usb ports with bandwidth you lost me (bandwidth also deals with the offline?)
