And they end up connecting to your computer through a Ethernet/USB/Wi-Fi.

thanks for that and time for a couple more questions...
1) my internet is slow, but im not sure why. i checked via command prompt and only 2 computers are using the same internet (2 computers are almost always used, my parents/family computer and then my laptop). to explain how slow, it takes about 30 seconds to load the notebookforums.com homepage. and about 10 seconds for the reply to thead window to open, and adjust itself.
2) i have a "windows secuirty alert" that says my antivirus reports it is turned off. i click the turn it on button, and that brings up some warning saying are you sure you want to turn it on blah blah blah which i say yes. and then avg still says its off. however, i am able to run scans and update the virus definitions still...whats wrong?
thanks guys

1) Go to speedtest.org and run. What is your "ping", what are the "up" and "down" speeds?

2) This is beyond me but. I ignore most Windows security alerts, rarely have they informed me of an issue I care about. In other words it thinks it knows how to set things better than I and I tend to disagree with Windows.

Like I said I don't know about this but why are you running two AV's? I thought more than one at a time can cause conflict and really not helpful.

Hi fading!

hi powerpack, im only running avg and superantispyware. or is windows defender considered an av?
ping is 250 ms.
.63 mbps download
.08 mbps upload
my average is like 12 blocks below average isp.
mb is megabytes right? i seem to max out (realistically) at 330 kb/s when im downloading (whether its from a host or peer to peer)

redid speed test
75 ms ping
.81 mb/s download
.09 mb/s upload

Hi fading! I thought Windows Defender is more of a anti spyware? Your connection speed looks bad. It sucks?

honestly, no idea. one of the teachers over at my school told me to turn my former laptop on in safemode and run windows defender once. i was using internet explorer (i dont really like chrome layout, and firefox is slow for me..) and for some reason tons of tabs kept opening (blank ones) as soon as i started the IE program. so i guess defender is a bit of both? im not sure.
yeah my connection sucks bad. to get a youtube video to load it can take anywhere from 2-3x longer than the video on a bad day and maybe 1 and quarter on a better day. before (like 3-4 ago and beyond) videos would buffer as soon as i load and i wouldnt have to pause and wait for load times ie a 10 minute video would load completely in ~ 3 minutes or less..and then simple webpages (ie a forum thats mostly text buttons, the giant banner to get to the homepage and an ad or 2) will take can take like 2 minutes to load, and thats not even counting on clicking on a thread yet.
i THINK i know whats wrong, but it may just be coincidence and either way i have no idea how to fix the problem. recently (few days ago) my parents had to get new phones because the old phones (land lines) died. could that somehow be the problem with the phone jacks or something?

retested on speedtest again: 67 ms ping
.91 mb/s dl
.09 mb/s ul
Time to call ISP and go through some line testing and reset with them We are still talking about DSL, right?

Average should be at least 5-6mb/s dl and .9-1 mb/s ul!

cheers ...

433 MB is a lot of memory for any single program to be using. iexplore.exe is Microsoft Internet Explorer. If the program is called iexplorer.exe or other variant of the Internet Explorer process name, then you probably have a virus.
Yea iexplorer.exe is an "AdClicker advertising program" remove immediately. Oops.
ok sorry i was wrong the large 440k program is iexplore.exe not iexplorer however i also have an explorer.exe, using around 47k memory
post #179 of 229
iexplore is the IE, explorer is the Windows Explorer. Both are good and don't play with.

any reason why its using so much memory?
