The notebook is a compaq presario c500.The seconds are not counting in the bios setup screen.Obviously the clock is wrong whenever the pc is turned off and or restarted.I have already replaced the battery(cr2032 3V)twice to make sure it is not that.I also updated the bios. That did not work. What controls the time?Actually any help since I know liitle about this area of issues.

Welcome to the forums.

I've never heard of this before. Did you update the bios incorrectly? Retrace your steps.

If its not keeping time either your RTC chip is screwed or the battery/power rail isnt supplying power to the CMOS. Use a multimeter and do a continuity test.

To cover bases, try remove your AC power and battery pack, hold the power button for 30 seconds and try starting back up again.

The Fix

Flipfire was correct as to the second directions. It is called a hard reset. What I did was remove the ac plug, the battery pack and the cmos battery(looks like a nickel).i then held the power button down for 20 sec. plugged it back in reinstalled both batteries and when it powered up i hit f10 to enter bios. At that time the clock started running from 0:00:01 which needed to be reset to the coorect time and the date needeed to be reset as well.No issues since that time.

Thanks for the info.

This also solved my clock freeze problem with my c500

Thank you
