Phat Linux question

Ok, I have just downloaded Phat linux XP and this is the version I plan on installing. Is it possible that there is an incompatibility with my 3.06 HT enabled processor? It said something about me having a v86 processor and I needed a x386 or x486. (these numbers may be wrong, im not familiar with all that stuff.) I know it did say there was a problem with the v86 processor. Can anyone shed some light on this issue?

HT on linux

Umm, this is weird, cause if the OS cannot deal with HT, it should fall back to compatibility mode and run on x86 mode.

The future release of gcc 3.4 branch will finally bring HT support for the masses, meanning you could then recompile every part of your system or applications enebling Hyper Threading. But this is not now.

can you please post the exact error message you are getting as well as a tail -f /var/log/debug and /var/log/messages and maybe we will find a clue

Ok, I figured out the problem. I had to boot from dos. Sonce I'm posting anyways does anyone know if there is any version of linux that can run at the same time as windows xp pro? I know its possible with virtual pc but does any linux distro support this?

VMWare have a piece of software that does this brilliantly... I would recommend it... but it is a little expensive if you want to buy it *cough* kazaa...


Anyway... tbh, there aint much use for it unless you want to run some very specific programs... I would recommend that you install linux, and use it as the platform to run XP... because the other way round, and you completely loose the speed advantages of linux.

But bare in mind, none of these "virtual PC's" have 3d support, you will not be able to run games through them... the only real use for them is if you really love.. lets say macromedia director.

Hope this helps... there is also win4lin which I am told runs extremely fast as well

Well this is what I actually want to try but I don't know if it is possible. I want to run a dedicated linux server for a LAN party while playing on it from windows xp. The games will mostly be half life mods. Would VMWare do this for me?

Um, yes it could, but you will need a fair knowledge of networking. Here is how:

1) considering that vmware will not have accelerated 3d, you are gonna have to play on windows native and run linux virtually in VMware.

2) You gonna have to 'bridge' the virtual ethernet device of virtual linux to appear on the LAN as the window box will

Finally, NO, i CAN'T recommend it. It is gonna lag. Realise that your virtual machine will reserver at least 128 MB of memory and the processor usage is big. When you gonna launch a window games ...arghh. Forget it. Buy a cheap old PC ( i run q3a, ut, TO etc .. servers on a Cyrix 133 Mhz 32 Megs EDO running fbsd 4.7 Stable ), set it upe with linux and run the server from there. You could experiment but it certainly not gonna be viable. Apart if the sager morph at night into an IBM mainframe or a Quad Xeon.

No YOU CANNOT RUN 2 OS NATIVE at the same time. It is one or the other.

Ok thanks, I'm not going to install phat linux. Now for my other linux problem. I just downloaded mandrake 9.1irc2 and tried to install it and it would start up with the screen asking me to hit enter to install or f1 for more options. I hit enter then the screen went black. I am a REALL N00B when it somes to linux so if anyone knows the problem or can refer me to a easy to install linux distro I would really appreciate it.
