Dell XPS 1640 vs Dell Studio 1555 (links provided)

am about to enter my second year of college.

I currently own a Toshiba Satellite brand computer with a large 17 inch display (not very portable :/), but it crashed for the third time yesterday, and I lost a lot of important papers so I'm gettin a new computer.

Well, my folks are getting me a new computer, and they hate getting stuff online, and these are the two computers we have decided on at the local Microcenter:

Here is the Studio: http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0312314

Here is the XPS: http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0311869

The only games I play on my computer are the Battlefield series (1942, vietnam, battlefield 2) and Counter Strike, Team Fortress 2, and Left 4 Dead.

I never use my laptop outside, so i prefer the glossy screens.

Reliability is the issue I am most concerned with. I want the thing to last without multiple trips to the computer tech, unlike my Toshiba Satellite P205.

Overall, which woud be the better computer?

If you guys need me to provide more information, please ask.

Thanks!!

When the computer crash is more likely related to software issue. I assuming your new Toshiba is using Vista (probably ofcouse). And do note that new laptop always comes with bloatware and junks that can really load up alot unwanted processes on RAM can be overwhelm system resources overtime and cause OS unstable.

Fresh install OS is highly recommended if you do know what you're doing. And for the new laptops option:

- XPS has stronger CPU which is useful for L4D but slight older model GPU.
- Studio has newer GPU which is best if you want it to run on high graphic setting again slow CPU can be some slow down on CPU intensive games.

Personally i go would go XPS for high CPU because i can always play games with med or low-med graphic setting.

Well the Toshiba is my old laptop, running about 2 1/2 years old now. First the cd drive stopped working which required the harddrive getting replaced. Then something called the VGA card (I think that is what it is called) broke and basically the screen looked like someone ate a pack of crayons and threw up, and now I keep getting all these registry errors, and I am now missing files, and I cant open a single folder on it or read any CD's or anything that is plugged into the USB ports (for example, it wont recognize flash drives or my printer).

Thank you for your input about the new computer though. I wish I had a broader range of options, but my parents were the victims of identity theft recently (they got their money back so everything is ok) so now they only deal with either amazon.com or local stores.

Oh sorry i misread your Toshiba laptop. But does sounds like having some issue with OS on registry errors and USB devices doesn't get regonized. Hardware issues can't be solved without replacing them. But with faulty CDdrive, i don't understand why replace the harddrive instead? That's odd.

Well your parents are not the only victims, i had my stuffs stolen couple years ago, losing everythings is a pain without insurance.

Anyway i haven't ordered anything online lately so i can't help you with that. There are people going to newegg.com but i do not know how "legit" they are.
