My ASUS G2S is slow... Why?

Hi everyone! New here, and I hope U guys can help out..
I bought a G2s a couple of days ago with an Intel T7500 cpu and nvidia 8600gt graphics. I installed 3dMark 06 and gave it a go and the result was a disapointing 1880... Before buying I read lots of reviews and the marks it should be able to hit is in the high 3000-range (even low 4000:s in some isolated cases..) so why is mine so much worse? I use vista ultimate, no aero and no sidebar and power4gear high performance so I think I´ve done what I can to make it as fast as possible.
I also use the latest gpu drivers from nvidia!
Any ideas?
Thanx

Give it sometimes for Vista to catch up with your working preferences. Clean up un-needed start up processes and services would also help. The reviews of the benchmarks, do they reflect the exact system that you have? Or were they being conducted under a totally different software configuration?

yeah, as far as I can see the specs are exactly the same.. weird, this...
as for vista it was already installed and since I bought the g2 second hand I´m not sure how fresh the install is but since the previous owner deleted all programs and files he had put on the hd I figured I´d keep it.. my internetconnection is pretty slow and I dont want to go through all the updates..
tried again with the old asus drivers..and now I got an even worse 1720...
guess I´ll have to reinstall vista after all..

Let us know. Make sure you back up the drivers first, just in case.

more tests and I´m beginning to think there´s something wrong with my card.. 5900 3dmarks...and it behaves mysteriously..
the test where the elephants spin... 145-150fps and on all my other computers those numbers stay pretty much the same throughout the test, but the g2 suddenly drops to 1-2fps and stays there for a couple of seconds and then goes back up again...
all the tests were the same, nice high fps-numbers followed by sudden drops..and then back up again!
faulty card?

Hard to say. Our G50VT-X1 acted like that (dropping fps in between) during some tests as well in the beginning.

Problem solved...but at a cost!
The problem was heat! The gpu overheated and slowed things down.. I opened the thing up, cleaned the fan and vents, put it back together and ran 3dMark06 and...no difference. Then I downloaded and installed Powerstrip to slow the gpu down and eventually the stuttering stopped. Default values were 475mhz processor and 700mhz memory and way down at 400/600 the damn thing started to become stable.. 3290 3dMarks isn't anywhere near what I ought to be getting but it is still a major improvement..
But I'm not satisfied, more experimenting will take place...

You are sure you want to experiment further with a new comp? I would document your findings and push for a repair/replacement.

Well...it's not that new... Like I wrote in an earlier post I bought the thing secondhand...and without warranty! Good price...and now I understand why...
So I don't think Asus will be that helpful and here in sweden I seriously doubt that warranty extends to more than 1 year and mine came out of the store in March-08...
But you are right, Asus has made "goodwill" repairs on computers in the past so I guess I'll have nothing to loose giving them a call.. For the G50/70-models with the same problem a Bios update was the cure (the safety-temp was set to 81 degrees C... Way too low...) and even though I use the latest Bios in mine (not that I've heard that would be a fix on a G2..), maybe they're aware of the problem and now how to fix it.
I had not thought of it that way and simply figured I'd have nothing to loose by experimenting... So, I'll give them a call in the morning (22:15 here now..)
Thanks for the eye-opener!

Finally... Problem SOLVED!! Kinda...
Gave Asus a call, and based on the serial they said warranty expired July 6th... Anyway the guy at Asus said that some drivers worked badly with the G2 and recommended a reinstall of Vista..so I did! With a fresh install I tried 3dMark06 once again and...no hickups whatsoever! Low score (around 3000) but at least the framrates kept consistent! After that I installed the latest drivers from nvidia, had another go at 3dMark and the stuttering was back (worse than ever..).. Framerates were slightly higher though (except, of course, for when the stuttering occured) but the total score came to a mere 1950...
So.. With the original driver (dated sometime 2007...) everything worked smoothly but slowly and with the new driver things sped up but at the cost of stuttering (to the point of freezing..).. So how the reviewers got 3900-4000 marks I'll never now..
I will try some older nvidia drivers (newer than the original one, though..) and see what happens but for now I'll take the old driver over the new one anyday...

Good news indeed! You can also submit your benchmark scores into our system.

The alternative would be to run the new driver with powerstrip to lower the gpu and memory speeds... It seemed to work for a while yesterday even though I can't see how lowering the speeds would compensate for an incompatible driver... But messing around for a mere 300 points feels like more trouble than gain... Feels better keeping everything at stock speeds, and I guess in-game performance will benefit from that more 3dMark...

And I will take your advice and let Vista settle in for a couple of days before judging the old driver.. Weirdly vistas benchmark gave the gaming performance a score of 5.4 with the original driver and 5.2 with the new one so actual gaming and benchmarks might not be one and the same...
I'll give it a couple of days and then report back! Thanks for bearing with me...

Totally cool. Thanks for the feedback!

Now I've tried everything and it seems there's no fix.. The chip must be faulty...
I installed nTune and realtemp, everest and all give the same results.. My cpu-temp is ok (around 45 idle and max 70 under load) but the gpu temp is off the charts... 85-90 idle and under stress it rushes up to 110 and above... Temps i C by the way...
Everything inside the computer is clean, no dust, so even though I dont know what safe temps on a G2 are I'm pretty sure 110 is way too high..
Some guy in some forum said his temps dropped when he installed windows 7... I dont see how that would help but since I'm a bit curious about 7 anyway I might try it but...
So, a faulty gpu..and warranty expired July 6th...
