wasup,

ok so the problem that im having on my 1710, is that on windows 7 64 bit, the ram shows 4gb installed but only 3.25 available. Does anyone know why this is happening?

btw: i am using the current RTM build of Win 7, also when i was using windows 7 RC, it showed the full 4 gb at use, so i dont know whats going on

Specs:
xps m1710
T7600G
4GB

thanks in advance

can't tell ya, since I am not using the RTM

Let see if other can confirm this or not. If it is, then RTM is not quite ready ;-)

Moved this to Software General.

cheers ...

Are you sure it's x64? Maybe the build you had was mislabeled.

ya its 64 bit, ive made sure of that numerous times. I never had a problem with this in xp or vista so i dont know why windows 7 is not allowing the full 4 gigs

It has to do with the M1710's chipset, the Intel 945PM, it cannot address more than the 32-bit RAM limit (which is about 3GB). It's a hardware limitation of the chipset, and nothing can be done about it sadly. This is also why the M1710 can only support up to a maximum of 2x 2GB DDR2-667 SO-DIMM's.

Long story short, it's a hardware limitation, and you're SOL.

Also, neglected to mention, Vista had a nice little "feature" that reported the full installed memory in system properties (started with Vista SP1 IIRC, both 32-bit and 64-bit versions) but could only use what was physically able to be used (in the case of the M1710, about 3GB).

Right, I forgot about that. Happened to my old A8Js. Even argued about this with a few people.
