Sager NP9280

I had the NP9850 pre-ordered but I canceled my pre-order because I think the 9280 suits my needs more. I am a gamer but I play games like, Oblivion, Diablo III (when it comes out), Warcraft III, ect. I have been told that this is highly upgradeable and in like 4 years it can be still going strong (with upgrades). Is this true? Because that is what turned me away from the 9850, the lack of upgradeability.

the np9850 is at the end of the core 2 product cycle, but has SLi

the np9280 is at the start of the i7 cycle, but No SLi, but can have 12GB DDR3.

If it is straight-away gaming, I'd have stayed with the 9850 solely because of the SLi. If you're playing more CPU-based games such as GTA4, the np9280. Ask around what others say your listed games are... CPU or GPU, or both heavy. If it's gpu, 9850. If it's CPU or both, 9280. Then see what your next move will be.

I agree with ganzonomy. Although the dual video cards are tempting, the i7 processor still makes the 9280 more popular among our hardcore gamers (not to mention that it is currently in stock and shipping daily). There have also been mixed signals from Clevo that the 9280 will be SLI compatible in the future.

yup, but I can't give out false info if the 9280 WILL support SLi down the road, till it actually happens. I'm partial to the 9280 as it's out tangibly, people have it, and the i7 is a NEW cycle, it has a long product life ahead for upgrades (I'd like to see nehalem EX in there), whereas the core 2 is done. MAYBE one more revision of some sort, and that's it.

My next gaming rig will be something in the vein of the 9280.

It is a powerful gaming laptop I mean combing the i7 With single GTX 280 should be more than enough to play most games right? And in the future if a better processor or GPU comes out I can always upgrade.

yup. If nehalem ex fits, you can plop that in when the bios is ready. If a GTX 3xx-m card comes out, you can plop that in too as the np9280 is mxm 3.0, which means it's the latest generation and you can upgrade the card and the CPU. Hell, I'd put in an SSD and 2 HDDs in raid 0. SSD for the OS and programs, the raid 0 for storing files. This way you get storage that won't kill the SSD with writes, and the reads for the SSD to start up the OS and other apps will be blazing fast.

Yeah I think Im gunna get the Intel 160GB SSD gen 2. And then tack a 500GB 7200RPM but I dont know if I want to do RAID 0 because if for some rare reason a HDD fails then I am kinda screwed.

You also can RAID 1 the 2 HDDs... fault protection. While having the SSD as the OS / APP drive.

Just don't let the SSD get documents or the paging file on it, and you'll be ok. There are in-house (ie: on vista) tweaks you can use to minimize writing problems to the SSD drive that will also improve performance to HDDs.
