[?]E1705 : How to control fans in Windows 7

Thread Starter
I was using I8KFanGui for a long long time to control the fans and it was doing a fine job. But it sort of stopped working after I installed Windows 7 RC2 as it can only force both the fans to run at high speed. The manual option to run the fans at low speed at all times and automatic settings don't work anymore.

I tried speedfan too but the option to turn on Dell settings is not working either. The fans turn on only after the CPU goes above 65C or so.

So, wondering if anyone else using Win7 on this laptop and able to control the fans. BTW, there are absolutely no other problems and it runs smoother than the XP days.

Thanks.

No replies So, most E1705 users have moved on to newer models? Or still with XP?

I pre-ordered a 7 Home Premium license for just $50 hoping it'd be a nice upgrade and so far I am really impressed, but the fans running too late is bugging me ...

Or maybe they haven't tried W7? Make a thread under Windows Software Section and see if you can get more input.

cheers ...

Fan control consumes CPU threads thus increasing temperature. You could try software undervloting such as RMclock (google it) to lower your overall temperature and use HWmonitor (google that too) to monitor it. i8k and i9k fangui no longer produce accurate temperatures for the fans to read off of anyway.

I am still using a total of four E1705/9400's and using win xp in all of them.

These were $2,000 machines just a couple years ago. I buy and replace approximately four notebook computers every couple years. It just doesn't make sense to me to purchase new, when they depreciate 75% of their value in a couple years.

I use specialized software specific to the DJ industry and it works very well {{stable}} with win xp, so I have no desire to upgrade to vista or win 7 on my work machines.

However, a lot of prior e1705/9400 owners have moved on to newer machines. I know, I've purchased four of them within the last year for the price of one new Alienware super notebook. The 9400's are all perfectly fine running machines...

Not really any reason to replace these machines unless you've moved on to some newer games. But even then you could just upgrade your vcard. The E1705 was highly underappreciated. I've had mine for 3yrs and am currently running Win7 RC and it smokes my dads 6 month old quad core. The newer Dells don't have the feel of the E1705 to me. Will be a tough decision on what to buy when I finally decide to upgrade. Which will probably be after Win7 RMT releases.

To the OP, I've noticed my fans sometimes go nuts. This was a horrid problem with Win7 Beta. It's now super rare on RC, and I expect RMT for it to all but go away. I'm guessing it was a driver issue that's been worked out since RC drivers came out.

Wow finally someone with the same problem as I have. I have the e1705/9400 with windows 7 RC2 32bit installed but no fans support whatsoever. What I did was install fangui, setup a profile, and it has been running nicely since then.

I was like the OP a windows xp fan only. I never touched Vista, but by chance someone mentioned the window 7 RC2 download from microsoft. I gave it a try and was shocked, at the huge speed difference. Also windows 7 was able to install all drivers for the E1705/9400 automatically, all windows signed drivers. Unfortunately there are no more Dell Bios Updates for this unit.

In everything else windows 7 handles much much better, compared to windows xp, except for the fan problem. Which must be something in windows 7 RC2. I hope anyway.

If I find a solution I will post it here for others to read.

I think part of the problem with mine is I think one of my fans is on its last leg. I really need to stop putting it off before it dies and half my laptop doesn't have adequate cooling. One of the fans is whining and occasionally makes a strange noise that I would imagine a dying whale would make. Not really sure where to go for replacement fans. And I refuse to buy parts from Dell.

You can buy fans on eBay for $10-$20 ...

Thanks! That's helpful. You don't happen to know the part numbers for the both fans? Might as well replace both.

just type in e1705 fan in the search box and you will get a bunch of results...

I8kfangui is working perfectly for me in Windows 7 RTM. I9kfangui didn't though. BUT it looks like i8kfangui is better anyway! More options and just seems more professional overall.

I hoped by the time RTM rolls around they would have fixed the lacking BIOS Fan control. I wonder what in windows is blocking the Bios from doing it's job? This is really strange....
