Read the article I posted and you'll see that the most the grease will help with is the 4C jump from cpu to heat sink. The temperature difference between the cpu and the outside can be anywhere from 10-60C, and it is the heat sink which is responsible for that temperature difference. That is what I mean by bottle neck. If the heat sink sucks, there is little you can do to improve your cooling system.

About the temperature, yours seems fine, but here is a little known secret. The higher your CPU temperature, the MORE efficient your cooling system gets. So if your cpu temperature is 75C (and stable) your cooling system will use less energy to keep it at that temperature than if your cpu temperature was 40C. The draw back is the danger of frying your cpu if you take the temperature too high.

So the heat sink must be made out of bad material or too small...

I would think more of the design

Oh my god, I was surfing and CPU heatens to 51 C. Now it is not cooling below 49 C /120 F, the Notebook just idling for half an hour. The left halt of the notebook is quite warm while the right is convenient cool.
Interesting, though not doing anything, task manager shows a CPU usage of 30-40%, but processes running in task manager are all at 0%. Is that some background process? The glass effect? But i'm not actually using it, just watching the empty desktop with task manager.

Software and drivers up to date? Run a virus scan?

Everything up to date. Yes, a virus scan is running. The only programms running from start in msconfig are virus scan and touchpad software.

Is it better today or is it still the same as your last post? What about a restore point?

What is a restore point?

So i made a few "tests", it really looks like the cooling-management isn't working very good. When I boot the notebook and then let it just run, doing nothing, the CPU temp goes up to 43 C / 109 F, and then the fan kicks in. The CPU temp then remains at 43 C. CPU usage now is near zero. After a while, the fan turns only on a very slow level, almost unhearable, but by using a programm it starts to run higher. Doing nothing again it goes to the slower level after a while again.
Well, this situation is far away from ideal, but I can't see any alternatives.

Thanks for helping me, cheers!

Restore point: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...System-Restore

Might want to re-install some of Lenovo apps?

Which? And why should this help? And why restore? I have my notebook for two weeks now.

cheers

New system it is then. I would keep my eye on that for another week and then call in for clarification if it persists.

need help opening my U350.

Hi all,
seems that Lenovo doesnt much care about the fan problem. Though my computer is just a month old now, i thought to open it up and put on some good thermal paste on the cpu.
The problem comes in there opening the silver front cover. I tried removing every possible screws i find on the back to release the front silver cover but its still not free to be removed. I dont see anything I can unscrew there and thus had to give up soon after.
Could anybody help me find a guide or similar on opening the U350 or just tell me what i might do next. Yes, I understand that Im going to void my warranty with this.
Thanx for you help.

Attached a pic of what I did : http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/9013/imgp0001vt.jpg

Has anybody thought of changing the fan to a silent one? If its even possible.

edit :: sry for the bad link before
Hi, I did the same yesterday. Please read my comment to the end before starting. So what you have to do is remove every screw on the under side. Then remove the cover of the harddisk, which is hold by 6 screws. The harddisk itself is held by one screw. Remove it, slide it aside. Under it you'll find another three screws to remove. The keyboard has to be removes too because under it there are two more screws holding the silver cover. Removing the keyboard means three screws and the two tabs under the alt- and the space-key, and detach the cable. Then the silver cover should be removable, but it is not very easy, so be careful.
The bad news is, that afterwards, you still don't have access to the cpu and the heatpipe. I didn't see how I can remove the motherboard, because everything there seems to be connected So I put it together again, I was simply too worried about making a damage.

btw, your picture can't be shown

thanx, i corrected the link. I guess my problem was removing the screws from under the keyboard. Thank you for your tip.
Since its so much of a hassle from you description, I might have to rethink this for someother time or wait for a step by step guide.
Ill look after this post if you come forward on this.
Takecare.

You got so close already with the removal of the top screws under the keyboard. Disconnect the wireless connectors, remove the LCD (complete casing) by removing the connectors to the board from the top side. The rest is prying the casings apart to access to the motherboard.

I'm sorry, I'm from Switzerland so my english is not top. I don't exactly understand how to remove the LCD. Is this easy or full of risks? And what do you mean with "prying the casings apart"?

thanks!
Removing the "whole" LCD is not so bad as removing just the LCD itself. It is being connected the notebook by a few screws and cables connecting to the board.

Prying - the top and bottom cases are kinda snapped together; once the screws are being removed you should be able just to separate them.
