Gateway 75(xx) and 4GB of memory?

Hello all,

This has been troubling me for a while now. As most you know, most laptops have an upgradeable slot for additional RAM, and one buried slot (claimed not upgradeable). The 7510 GX laptop 'specs' said that it can go up to 1.5 GB RAM. I found someone who disagree, and claims to upgrade similar laptops to 2 GB RAM. Check this link:

This begs the following questions:
(1) Is this really true? Is it possible to install and upgrade memory into a "non-upgradeable slot" which is normally buried under the keyboard?

(2) What really limits the maximum RAM a laptop can have? Is it only the operating system? I heard XP 64 bit and Vista can manage 4 GB RAM and up. Or is there a cap on the motherboard and/or processor?

I have the Gateway 7510 GX for years now and I am planning to upgrade. I used my laptop for intensive IDL and C++ programming and occasionally older games it can handle, like command and conquer, and red alert etc.

Please share your thoughts and experiences on this matter. I would really like to settle this matter once and for all. Thanks.

Alvin.

1.5 according to gateway, 1GB according to crucial.com
*note for gateway is "user accessible".

if the internal bay is actually a slot and not soldered onto the mainboard than 2GB may be possible. being DDR-I, I doubt 4GB is possible as I have never seen a DDR-I module larger than 1GB available.

Are you able to look under the keyboard to confirm?

2GB is the max for the 7510gx. 1GB external slot, 1GB internal slot. Look at the sticky for memory upgrades for the emachines m68(XX) and gateway 74(XX)GX, MX75(XX) laptops to help you choose the correct memory. I suggest getting Samsung memory.

Thanks guys, I bought compatible 2Gb RAM. Funny things is....I can't get the keyboard out! He he he, that keyboard is stuck on the lappy like a leech on a guys back...who is in a straight jacket! I found 2 guides for disassembly of the M-series of Laptop, both slightly different from the 7500 series. Any pointers for keyboard removal on the 7510GX would be great.

There are 2 screws holding down the keyboard. If removing those don't help, you may have something sticky holding it down, just keep trying to pry it up.
