Keyboard unresponisve until OS booted up (on Dell Vostro 1510)

Hi everyone!

Has anyone seen something like this? ...

The built-in keyboard works perfectly while the installed Windows XP is up and running, including Fn functions, CAPS LOCK etc.

But during system boot up, it shows no reaction at all! Neither does hitting Caps lock, NUM and Scroll lock change the indicator LEDs.
-> no BIOS access
-> no boot up from CD/DVD
-> not even the XP Boot Menu (that shows up after hitting F8 or abnormal shutdown) is controllable

As soon as Windows is up, it works perfectly again.

Of course, I also tried a USB keyboard and it behaves exatly like the internal one.

Thanks for any hints

PS: I put this on the general board, because I suppose it isn't necessarily Dell Vostro specific

Did this always happen? What have you tried so far?

No, it didn't always happen.
But I can't tell when exactly this started, since I'm not the owner and the owner himself can't tell.

Besides trying the USB keyboard, I installed the latest BIOS from Dell (possible via WinPhlash fortunatley) and I unplugged the power and the battery for a while... unsuccessfully.

We have another thread mentioning about the BIOS was being totally bypassed and the system starts straight onto Windows. I am clueless in this, since you already updated the BIOS (was to be my recommendation).

Let us hope for some more inputs.

Hmm im used to seeing this in old home built PCs where the Legacy USB option was turned off. But you should have been able to get at least to the BIOS screen. Try doing a power flush of the system which is a completely unrelated fix to the issue but it couldnt hurt.

Remove Battery, Remove Ac Power cord, Hold Down Power On Button for 5 Seconds.

Turn on and see if it worked. Meanwhile I'll see if i can dig up a solution for this one.
