Inspiron 1501 Power Problem

Hi,

I am working on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop. At first the laptop displayed a message when first turned on "Warning: the battery cannot be identified This system will be unable to charge this battery. Press any key to continue." I googled this warning and some recommended that the BIOS be upgraded. After the BIOS was upgraded the warning message did indeed go away. But Windows XP still does not recognize this battery, and shows the laptop to be running on AC power even when the power adapter is not plugged in. Also, the charge light on the laptop does not light when the power adapter is plugged in.

I have tried using a different power adapter, but it made no difference. Also, I have tried removing the battery. When I press the battery status button all 5 green lights light up. If I press and continue to hold the status button, the lights flash off and immediately back on after 4 seconds...after 7 total seconds, the lights go off and stay off.

I don't know how to interpret the results of the battery status lights behavior. Please advise as to what the cause/solution of the problem is. Thanks in advance.

I am having the same problem with my 1501 Bill. I tried to download the BIOS updates, but I couldn't because I got a message that I didn't have administrator priveleges. I don't know how to get around this. I guess this is a very common problem with Dell laptops. Sometimes the laptop doesn't recognize the power cord is plugged in either, I don't know if getting a new one will fix the problem, it does get very hot. Good luck to all Dell users in getting this problem fixed.

One thing to try is to see how long you can run on battery alone.

These symptoms typically indicate either

1. Battery Issue
2. AC Charger
3. Motherboard including the DC Jack.

As You already mentioned, some have been able to fix this issue with a BIOS upgrade.

Had another issue with this laptop...a typing delay...after typing letters or words, they were slow to appear on the screen...% CPU used was low, and memory use was normal.

Then I read a post where another Inspiron user had the same problem until they removed the battery...I tried removing the battery and running on power adapter alone, and the typing delay went away...someone theorized that a bad battery pulls power away from the computer causing this issue...sound possible?

More evidence as to a bad battery causing all these problems?

^^ This sounded more like software issue than hardware. A system re-installation maybe?

cheers ...
