M6811 - Botched screen replacement leaves the backlight off

Hello everyone,

A couple of weeks ago I accidentally stepped on my M6811. What followed was a loud *CRACK* and me looking like this: . I had put so much pressure on the back of the panel that the LCD had a huge ink blotch in the top right corner. But to my surprise the display still worked and the back light was on. I have been using it as a server ever since, but two weeks ago I decided that I wanted my trustful portable worstation back.

A week ago then I ordered a replacement LCD panel off eBay and it came in the mail yesterday. I set aside some time to do the eye transplant and had it almost finished when I decided to boot it up before I assemble everything back together. To my utter disappointment, the LCD back light on the new panel didn't come on. I checked every cable and have completely assembled the laptop with the new panel just to make sure that there wasn't a contact that was blocking the back light from coming on. No such luck. I can see stuff happening on the screen, there just isn't any light to properly see the images...

I put the old, cracked panel back in and to make matters worse its back light isn't coming on either but as before I can still see stuff happening on the screen but there's no light. So now I'm completely floored as to what I could have screwed up. Before anybody suggests to use FN+F8 to brighten the screen, let me assure you that there's no light being emitted from my LCD panels at all.

Has anybody ever been through this and know what I could have destroyed in the process? Did I fry the inverter? Is there a hidden contact that is closed that I could be blocking?

I'm at the end of my wits.

. It could be that the replacement LCD is bad

. LCD replacement is a straightforward process, inverter cable, LCD cable is pretty much it.

. The connector end that goes into the back of the LCD must be pushed in snuggly and "taped" down as not to become loose during re-assembly

cheers ...

when you cracked the lcd, you may have also damaged the inverter

It sounds like the inverter or connection wire to it is bad. Try checking the connections. If that doesn't help, you can probably find a replacement on ebay.
