Gateway M505 cmos battery?

Hi: I have an old Gateway laptop computer M505...It has been sitting in a clostet, unused, for over two years. I did a full system recovery. I also purchased a new battery because the old one was DEAD. Would not even charge when AC was connected. I notice that every time I power the computer on, I get a loud beep and the black screen comes up with error messages. Error 0271:Check date and time settings...Warning 0251:System cmos checksum BAD-default configuration used...I thought that putting in and charging a new battery would correct this problem, but the incorrect time still persists. I have to correct it each time I power on the computer. I checked the Gateway website for my model M505, but I saw no mention of a cmos battery, nor where it may be located in case I need to replace it. I see batteries for sale on the internet that specify cmos for my computer, but why doesn't the Gateway website, nor the user manual, nor the support information make mention of the cmos battery. Please help, because this is a really nice computer but the clock issue is annoying me. I also noted that my history pages are not saved either. Only shows "Today's" history. Funny thing is, as long as I leave the ac connected, the computer powers on with the correct time...In the device manager, system cmos shows up as working properly. HELP

given the age, the cmos battery is dead and not holding a charge.

the cmos battery is usually non user replaceable for laptops. the only thing i can recommend is look for it on the mainboard and hopefully it will be in a socket or can be unplugged.

just be careful as those older units tend to have the battery soldered onto the board.

How is it that all of the date and time information is preserved, as long as the ac power is being used? I've had the ac power cord plugged into the laptop for the past three days, and each time I powered the laptop on, the date and time stayed correct. As soon as I disconnected the ac and ran the laptop off of the fully charged brand new battery-the date and time were lost...

There is no surprise there, you have a constant feed of power from the ac adapter. But once it is off the charger, the CMOS battery, as MichelleG mentioned, cannot keep any charges, the same would-be principle with many batteries that cannot power the notebooks when the charger is off.

Darn!!!! I guess I am in denial about having to replace that darn battery. I replaced on in my desktop, that was a piece of cake. This opening of the laptop thing scares me...I cannot find anything on the GATEWAY site that actually shows instruction on how to replace the cmos for my M505...I've Binged and googled, but cannot find any pictures, instructions...I know the cmos is located on my M505's motherboard, but I don't know how to get to the motherboard, nor do I know if the darn battery is sautered on...I ordered a cmos battery but the company does not provide any instruction on how to install it...

Your best bet is to collect a bunch of guides showing replacement of many parts of the notebook like:

or just break down and invest 10-15 bucks for a service guide.

Take a browse in NBF Guides Section or even this Gateway section, there might be already many personal guides as how to take the machine safely apart.

Thanks, GHN. I did check those links and saw some useful info...May not be as daunting a task as I thought. I went into the BIOS and copied down the information, in case I need to re-enter anylthing after I replace the cmos battery. I have a question. I noticed that my cd-rom is listed as the primary master, and my HHD is listed as the secondary master..Is this okay? I always assumed that the HDD would be the primary master?

That should be fine with the primary and secondary, as long as both works

I just got the new dvd-rw drive for my laptop. I removed the old cd-rom dvive, and installed the new one. As soon as I powered it on, nothing happened...It powers on and stays on the Gateway screen? What is wrong? Remember I said that the old cd-rom drive is connected as the primary master and my HDD is connceted as the secondary master...I loaded and ejected a disc, so the drive does work...
