would you trust/use ccleaner registry cleaner? i'm afraid to use it because it might delete something that my computer actually needs...

. Trust NONE of the registry utilities

. I use cCleaner myself

. Back up your registry first, there is an option built in.

. Use "disable" flag where possible, and NOT "delete"

I personally use many registry tools, and trust none of them to do 100% of the job. I like cCleaner because at least it is not so aggressive in "cleaning".

In cCleaner->registry->scan for Issues-> Fix selected Issues; at this time you will see a dialog box asking you if you want to back up the registry before the fixing!

I recommend that you read the FAQ for any tools that you plan to use; for cCleaner:

so i just want to confirm, if i back up, and i accidentily delete something that i actually need, then it will allow me to restore it, right?

I've used it many times in the past, including while I was working at TigerDirect.com's outlet store in Raleigh, NC. The other technicians recommended and used it frequently.

ok. so i installed comodo firewall, and ran the ccleaner registry cleaner. after the computer screen pops up, and the welcome screen shows, there is this long wait where there is a black screen {second time it has happened}. I am going to try to restore the ccleaner cleanupfiles. how do i go about doing that? then if that doesn't work, i will try uninstalling comodo firewall.

When you back up registry from cCleaner, it should ask you where you save the back ups. Go there, double click the back-up and re-import it into the registry.

Vista does have some black screen in waiting now and then, and that can be many things. Removing Comodo might or might not help, unless it was fine before you installed Comodo.
