i have a few questions about avast since i just downloaded it today. first, what is the avast! on-access scanner? it is titled resident protection. when i pause it, it turns off the anti-virus protection. i thought it was just a scanner.
and does this thing have a firewall?

Avast Home Edition FAQ:

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

"The On-Access Scanner provides protection for your emails, local network activity, Outlook/Exchange and Internet activity. The virus scanner allows you to perform in-depth scans of your system using the program's interface or the explorer context menu. The 'resident protection' will run as a background service and will scan all accessed executable files, documents or emails. "

No, Avast Home Edition at the moment does contain a firewall.

why does it always do a test of memory and start-up in the beginning? {anti-virus) and why must it always ask for my permission to run?

You have protection at all times, and the virus scanner scans memory upon loading. This utility does not include a firewall. I have used it for 3 years now and would definitely recommend it to anyone.

i have comodo firewall and windows firewall running. should i have both of those running at the same time? i thought you should not have that? one does not seem to be interfiering with the other though... at least i dnt think so.

I only use Windows Firewall on all platforms. Others prefer 3rd party Firewall (Comodo, Zone Alarm) over the Windows built-in. I see a few using both. All boil down to personal preference and belief.

ok. will there be any cons to this {having 2 running at the same time}? if they aren't trying to get rid of each other, then isn't it good since its like having 2 firewalls?
I don't know if there is any cons running multiple firewalls, it is just a waste of system resource as far as I am concerned.

wouldn't it be like double security though?

Well If you go to Windows Security Center and expand Firewall. it just say's that two firewalls running at the same time can cause conflict. That's what they say, whether it's true or not remains to be seen, as half the time MS haven't even got solutions for their own products !
A few days back they gave a solution where I had to download WMI Tools to fix a problem and I checked out on MS TechNet Forum and their thing didn't work, and their were many people (IT pros, I think) who were proposing all types of solutions which worked for some people but not for others. Always worth checking that out before screwing around for hours for something that even MS doesn't understand. Everyone was crying out for an update ;
That concerned EVENT ID 10.

I use Avast and Comodo. So far, my system is working fine.

Avast does have a semi-firewall which they call Network Shield. It is not exactly a firewall but it does protect your computer from being infected over a network by known network viruses. So far, it has stopped all viruses that wanted to get in my computer, this is the firewall and antivirus I'm currently recommending to my clients and friends.

ok. so i turned off windows firewall and it says that i am not protected anymore. i do have the comodo firewall. why is it not detecting that i have it? shouldn't it still say that i am protected?
In the Windows Firewall (Security) dialog box, you should see an option mentioning that you are using (making available) a 3rd party Firewall. Check that!
