Toshiba 1135 - Won't power up!

I've been using my old Toshiba 1135 with Ubuntu. My granddaughter wants a laptop so I thought I'd just re-install the original W-XP disc set (3 CDs) for her. The first CD announced that it would format the drive and I said "GO!" The install seemed to work right through to the end, but when I removed the CD and tried a restart, I got an Ubuntu "grub-loading error 71" message, the screen went black and now it will not power up at all.

HELP!!

Try boot up again with the live-CD and reformat the drive from there. I suspect that the 3 disks are recovery disks that used the recovery partition within the comp and got confused with the remnants of Ubuntu.

I already tried that, but at this point the problem is no longer that it won't boot up, the problem is that it won't POWER up. The power switch does nothing.

OK, now it will actually power up, but neither the Ubuntu 8.10 Live CD nor the W-XP install CD will do anything. It's like it doesn't even access the CD drive, but just quits with a bios message about error 71. I read somewhere on this forum that there is no such error code. Uh, I've got one on my screen! And it appears to be a remnant from the old Ubuntu install, since the Grub Loader is the first (and only other) thing that appears before the error message.

Have you making sure that the boot sequence starts with optical drive? You can also try to take the drive out and format from within an external housing.

(Also with Seablade suggestion in the Linux Section)

OK, thanks! I ordered an external housing and will wipe the drive that way. I need to get WIN XP back on this thing for my granddaughter so it will be easy for her. Ubuntu is great for my use (It's on some other computers in our office), but it's not for a young girl who only wants everything to work out of the box.
