LCD Televisions for Laptop

I'm looking at flat-panel LCD TVs, since prices have finally dropped into my range. I want to get one that I can connect both to our satellite dish (coax) and to my Linux laptop.

My laptop has a VGA out, so I guess I want a TV with a VGA input? Or is it better to shoot for VGA-to-S-video? How about the audio?

I know these are basic questions and I SHOULD know this stuff...

...but I don't.

What is the screen range that you are looking at? If your notebook only has VGA out, that to get a screen that supports both VGA and DVI. The audio is pretty much will be relying on the notebook audio, but if you have built-in speakers on the screen, it can be used by plug in via your audio output.

What is the main use of this screen? Monitor first, TV 2nd? or the other way around?

Bottom line, the screen is just as good as the source of inputs and the ability to accept them.

cheers ...

Thanks for your response!

1. We're looking at 32" to 42", $250-$500 roughly.
2. TV first, monitor 2nd

We're not videophiles -- even grainy video is OK by us. I just want a way to watch entertaining YouTube/Hulu videos (for example) without huddling around the laptop.

Like Q said, all you really need is a TV with the right connections. If it has a coaxial cable input as well as a VGA input and either computer or RCA sound input (you'll need a splitter cable if it's the latter), then you should be fine.

Cool, thanks. I also just realized (D'oh!) that I can take my laptop with me to the store to try before I buy. Still, it's good to know it should work.
