nc8430 battery charging problem

My nc8430 is nearly 3 years old and my battery life is getting significanlty shorter (approx. 30 minutes only).

When I fully discharge the battery, then plug it back to the mains and start Windows XP, the battery level slowly rises from 5% to about 70%. Then, the charging symbol starts blinking: about 1 minute charging and another 1 minute running from the mains (i.e. not charging). It seems like the charger is switching off for some period of time and then it just starts charging again. Just now the battery level is 88% and is still slowly rising.

Could this be any problem? What is the reason of switching the charger on-off-on-off... from about 70% of battery level?

I would run with the battery alone, after successfully charging it and see if the discharge is constant.

Then use the adapter all by itself and see.

It could be that the ac adapter itself is failing, but it could also mean that a failing battery causing the charger to act weird.

cheers ...
