well guys my 1730 is being replaced by dell since they no longer make the 1730 and i failed to convince dell to send the alienware laptops... they will send me a brand new XPS STUDIO 1640... i've requested some specs due to the foreverness in fixing my problem. btw they did send a replacement 1730 but even that is toast.

here is what they are sending me cay you guys give me somekind of idea what specs will be in it>

part # 224-5213

XPS 1640, T9800 (2.93GHZ) CORE 2 DUO

First you have the M1730 - XPS laptop ? Right..If so read on....

Dude, XPS 1640 is not a replacement for the M1730.

Call them back and scream bloody hell at them.


As far as the specs go, you will not know until the order number is sent, then you can check the specs online.

Time to escalate this issue and fast.

The GPU in the 1640 does not even come close to that of a M1730.

They either should be giving you a refurb M1730 or a alienware

You do have a M1730 right ?

What is the configurationr of your laptop?

2.40 ghz dual core
8700m GT SLI.
4 GIG Memory
vista ultimate...

dell is out of refurb 1730's alienware maybe dell owned but they refused to give that.

they did promise me a new XPS STUDIO 1640 not a refurb one is this still a bad deal for me?

just to be fair with dell how does the XPS STUDIO 1640 compare to a XPS gen2 since that was the first one i bought all i did was extend the warranty to get me the M1730.

Yes IMO the Studio laptop is not even close to replacing the M1730.

I would call them and ask to speak to a Supervisor, or higher.

Dell has reportedly given some Alienwares in place of the m1730.

But the fact that it uses shared memory for the video, single GPU not an SLi option, don't think you can put 2 hard drives in the studio.

Going from a 17inch screen to a 15.6 inch screen.

It may take alot of phone calls but keep at it.

You may have to threaten to go to the BBB, but keep asking, and demand to speak to someone higher, ask to escalate the matter until you have the proper replacement.

This makes me even more nervous to extend my warranty on my XPS M1710. I have a top-spec M1710 (best parts piece-for-piece) and if they tried to give me a Studio...

yeah, I can't believe they would try to offer a Studio in place of a M1730 - that freaking insane _ I would be going ballistic

right now this is what dell is sending me, i made them aware that if this does not comply with what i need i will send this back untill i get the right one. i was being nice. lol the rep actually made a mistake by saying two things 1) sending a inferior system 2) lawsuit.

well the other point you can raise when you escalte this is that the M1730 is a gaming laptop, The XPS 1640 is not,

I would also add that since Dell has moved thier gaming latops to the Alienware line, it should be from there you get your replaceent Gaming laptop.

I would call back again and tell Joe you want to escalate this issue,

I would also mention to them if they do not want to provide a gaming latop repalcement, then a full refund should be given to you.

thanks for the support Dave i will definately call back regarding this, since the replacement system is on its way i was advised to check it out first to see if it will meet my needs if it doesnt i will start my crusade.

if you guys can think of anything else please let me know i looks like i will need alot of amo for this battle.

what you guys think of the system spec on this replacement.

Don't send your 1730 back until they give you the right system. I think it's horrid that they are offering Studio's for warranty Swap with gaming laptops.

I would call back when it arrives and tell tem it can't play your games like Crysis, Call of Duty the frame rates are much lower than your M1730.

As far as the specs, your getting a poor subsitute for a M1730

One of the problems here is this "joe"

You need to get past him to a different rep - Ask for the escalation manager cus joe does not know jack shit about computers because if he did he would not be offering a XPS 1640 for a M1730.

If you can ever get one of the few reps there that know anything about computers this would probably be solved quickly

By The Way, search this forum, there are several horror stories like this one here, and some of them have a link to email Michael Dell and tell him your story.

I am not sure of the link myself, but I know it has been discussed here
