Dell e1705 replacement for water damage

Hi this is my first post and I just had a question about a replacement for my e1705 through complete care. I left my laptop outside and it poured and I completely forgot about it. I haven't talked to dell yet but I'll definitely be covered if I have complete care correct? Also I've been reading that sometimes you don't get the same laptop back and you get a replacement. What are the chances that I'd get another e1705 since I have accessories for it already that I like (bluetooth adapter that I'm hoping isn't ruined and an extra battery) or would I get a newer laptop since the e1705 has been discontinued? Also how long am I going to be without a laptop? I did a search but I wanted some answers for my specific case. Thanks in advance.

You'll probably be covered but just to be safe- definitely mention that it was an accident.

Chances of you getting another e1705 is slim. Mind listing the specs of your laptop?

Keep us updated! I'm interested in hearing how this turns out.

I just copied and pasted this from the dell site so sorry for it being such a long list.

Now why are you under the impression I wouldn't get another e1705? Do they automatically just give you a complete replacement system when it gets wet rather than trying to replace the parts? Also what kid of laptop would I end up getting do you think? Would my warranty still be good on this new laptop? And the time frame to get a new one. I'm debating if I should report it to dell or just leave it off and hope it turns on. thanks in advance

The decision to repair or replace depends on the amount and type of damage, along with the availability of the replacement parts.

the E1705 has not been made for some time now, and most likley any replacement e1705 units would be refurbs.

And then there is always the Dell Rep - Some are good, and get a decent replacement, others don't know the difference between a laptop and a bowling ball.

If they decide to replace the laptop post the replacement info here, then we can help you determine if you have a decent replacement or not.

When you say I could get a replacement what would be possible replacements for my laptop? laptops that dell is selling now? or last years models or what? As long as I'd get a 17" laptop that has close to the same specs I'd be satisfied
post #6 of 25
Laptops they're selling now. Since you have the x1400, it won't be that hard to find a replacement.

I think the most likely replacement will be the Studio 17 with the HD 3650 vid card.

now how long does it typically take? I'm going back to school so it's going to be tough.

I just talked to dell and they said if the depot decides it is more economical to replace the entire system thats what they will do. I am curious as to what all has to be damaged to constitute a new system. Also will the battery be replaced if it is damaged? I know the battery isn't covered like everything else is.

Do not send your system back to the depot. Be firm and just request a replacement. Let them know you want to see your replacement before you send your e1705 back. That's all you have to do.

The whole process takes around 2-3 weeks.

I don't have a typical account so I don't know if it's normal procedures. I got a discount because of being a student. How would I go about the whole process if I am requesting a replacement rather than sending it out to the depot. They told me it should take from 7-10 business days from sending it back to the depot and I'd get a new replacement if it was more economical as stated before so I think they can make sure they aren't going to replace individual parts.

Call them or talk to tech support through Dell Chat online. You'll need to give them your Service Tag #.

I already did that. They are dispatching a box. What I'm confused by is if they are telling me 7-10 business days for a repair or replacement and you're telling me 2-3 weeks for a replacement what would be the benefit to that?
Go with Dell tells ya. Ed4252 probably just stated his experience. 7-10 "business" days can also be interpreted as 2-3 "normal" weeks.

cheers ...

2-3 weeks is from experience from what has happened to me in the past - that counts weekdays/weekends. I've had 3 replacements already.

The reason why I told you to not send your system to the depot and just request a replacement instead is because if they send you a replacement you're not satisfied with, you don't have as much leverage.

If they send you a replacement while you still have your original system in hand, you can just decline the replacement system and have it sent back and request what needs to be fixed/improved.

^^Agreed. A very sensible suggestion.

cheers ...

they won't send me a replacement unit now. They say they can't do that. I am concerned that the battery and/or power cable will not work when they send it back which will be rough. I can't be paying for a new battery and power cable (which aren't covered under this warranty) Any tips on how to get them to send a replacement

they are repairing it rather than replacing it but I'm concerned that when i get it back everything but the battery and/or cable will not work.
the ac adaptor would be covered under warranty if it fails while under the laptops warranty period.

The battery only comes with a one year replacement coverage...so if your battery is not working well you are out of luck.

But they have the right to repair the laptop, and the only case where you can argue otherwise is if you had to send the same laptop back for repairs several times.

jesus

why dont you just wait. you can speculate like that

i'm 99.99% sure the depot will do a terrible job fixing your laptop and you will need to send it back 3 or 4 times to try to get the issue resolved. you cant just demand a replacement, that just tells dell that that's what your aiming for and they will make the whole process harder once they have flagged you a scamer weather it is justified or not. you need to give dell 3 attempts to repair the same issue before they have to entertain a replacement. then just complain, complain complain. eventually dell will get sick of you and issue a replacement
