Dell Studio XPS 13 Vista home preimum 32-bit TSST D633A dvd-rom. It worked fine new only a few months old and has quit working now it only reads commercial disc and not burned disc i.e. dvd's, cd's, or data disc. Reinstalled windows, downgraded firmware and upgraded doenst matter D400 old to D10 and D20 neither work, also deleted upper and lower filters but nothing. Any ideas?

I take it that you use the same software as before to read7play burned disks.

Firmware=optical drive firmware? Tried to take the optical drive out and re-seat it? Use of a disk cleaner?

cheers ...

Typically If cleaning the drive does not work, it's most likely time for a new CD Drive,

Not reading burned disks is usually the first symptom of pending failure.

Cleaning can help in some cases, but eventually it may get worse.

Yes dvd drive firmware, there has been four updates drom Dell. I tried blasting air through it last night and nothing. I am in Iraq and will see if I can find a laser cleaner but it may not be available. Thanks.

can you confirm the discs being used are finalized discs which can be done on the computer it was made from. Verify the discs in question work on 2 other drives.

Yes. I can use an external dvd drive and it reads fine on the same pc or I can put the disc in my work pc and it reads fine. I already ordered a drive so I am hoping that is the issue.

Its most likely the drive and since you have ordered a new one your problem will most likely end once the drive is replaced.
