XPS M1530 Heat...

Hello. So I've had my XPS M1530 for a year now and I've recently gotten into overclocking, undervolting (going through this now), and monitoring my internal temperatures due to playing Oblivion, WoW, and AOC. Anyway, I checked the temperatures, and while idle my core temp sits at about 77C. With dual monitors (goes into 3D mode) it'll reach ~86C just surfing the internet. While gaming/overclocked it can easily reach 90-93C. I've gamed for LONG periods of time and it never seems to go above 93C ever, which is good b/c the max is somewhere around 100C (probably because of my cooling pad).

So I've looked online and everyone else seems to have temperatures of ~20C lower! What's going on and how come my laptop is this absurdly hot? Do any other users have temps this high? Have I had faulty hardware for a year now? I'm basically just wondering if there's any other suggestions out there or if I should call Dell asking them whats up with my laptop (I have a 4-year warranty).

Thanks for the help/input!

Dell XPS M1530
Vista x64
Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz
nVidia 8600M GT
4GB Ram

Edit: I just tried undervolting, and after changing the voltage it says "stress your CPU for 45minutes to make sure you don't get a blue screen of death or laptop crashes." It tested for a minute and RMClock (the program to undervolt) had to throttle the temps down b/c the CPU temps were getting over 95C. WTF?!?

Bump?

have you done a thorough cleaning of the fans

And if your going to OC, I would also suggest new thermal compound on the GPU and CPU

No I havn't cleaned out my fans yet, but definitely plan on it before Aion comes out.

And how do I go about getting thermal compound on the GPU/CPU? Since I have a warranty, would Dell install it if I bought it?

I doubt that Dell would put on the thermal paste for you if you buy it. You can always try to ask them to apply new one for you though.

cheers ...

Those temps are pretty high considering your using a cooler also.

I would personally reapply good quality thermal paste like Tuniq-TX2 and clean the fan and heatsink radiator as after a year it's sure to have some sort of fluff/dust build up.[don't let the fan spin at a million miles an hour if using compressed air to clean]

Disassemby instruction's here http://supportapj.dell.com/support/e....htm#wp1084976

I personally would recommend Tuniq over arctic silver, because 1. it isn't electrically conductive and 2. it is easier and cleaner to apply using the blob method [about a small match head size blob]

Don't do this to anything with a blue wax pad [usually the northbridge] just leave that alone and try not to get it dirty, the only two thing's using thermal paste should be the GPU and cpu core, make sure those and the mating face's of the heatsink are very clean before applying the new paste.

If your not confident of doing this yourself, tell dell it's running hot and get them to send a tech out.....like qhn said.

have you had overheating issues before?

When I used to play Age of Conan my laptop would hit very high temps, but now I'm hitting those temps without playing any intense games! It might just be the build-up of dust on the fan. Either way, 90C+ is just way too hot even while gaming. I've never had my laptop force-shutdown though, even while OCing.

I did order some Tuniq TX-2 and will be applying that soon. I did some research and some people actually put a small square of copper in between the CPU and heat sink... Do you think that's necessary? Any other tricks besides using a cooling pad, undervolting, new thermal compound, highest BIOS, and cleaning out the fan? I know M1530's reputation is an extremely hot laptop, but there are some out there that don't get above 80C and I'd really like to know what their doing! It wouldn't be the fan would it?
