extremely low performance handling compressed files (asus m6n)

Thread Starter
i have bought an asus m6n (centrino 1.5ghz, 512ddr, 40gb hitachi 4200rpm, radeon 9600) last week and have been testing it around. it performs great on everything, except when handling (moving, copying, extracting) with compressed files (zip, rar, etc) with bigger sizes (the ones i had problems with were around 600mb).
i really don't know what may be causing this to happen, but it sure is annoying, as it may spend several minutes accessing the files (with the cpu activity led always on) either accessing them through explorer, winace or winrar.
initially i thought it could be something wrong with the files, but then i tried them out on my desktop (duron1.3ghz, 384sdr, 80gb barracuda 7200.7, matrox g400 max) and they worked fine.. so, what's wrong here? how can this happen when everything else is normal?

help : (

Can't say for certain, but I think your 4,200 rpm hard drive is probably the bottleneck. Especially when you're comparing it to a 7,200 rpm desktop drive.

i thought of that too, but i don't think it would make such a big difference.. i used to have a 5400rpm hdd on my desktop and the performance leap to the 7200rpm wasn't that big. maybe some misconfiguration.. i'm lost here : \

i think it is your hdd..... is have a 7200 rpm one in my laptop and my desktop they are within seconds of each other..... but i would check other things first

That article compares the diff speeds of hard drives .... take a look and look at the differences in speed.

Well, you can double check your System Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > Primary IDE Channel and make sure the Transfer Mode is set to DMA.

If you have a different anti-virus program on your new notebook than what you have on your desktop, that could also make a difference.

You may need to install a quicker drive to get the performance you're looking for.

oh man! thank you SO much : D
it happens that the anti-virus was set to real-time monitor.. so, in the case of the files i was talking about, which were iso's compressed in zip/rar, it was naturally taking a huge load of time accessing them (copying a 650mb zip archiv from a cd took like 10 minutes BEFORE starting to copy to the disk!!).
once again, thank you bloke : D and thanks enderet, for the link : )

Cool, it's great to hear you figured out the problem! Glad I could help out.
