i have a dell inspiron 9300 with xp. i bought it several years ago. it got a virus maybe a year ago and i reinstalled windows with a disk i got from dell in the mail. the only thing that was installed though was the operating system. i couldn't hear any sound, usb, cd/dvd drive wouldn't work, etc. i played around with some of the disks from dell but i couldn't figure it out. i put the noteback down and used my other computer for the past year. i want to get it running though. how do i install these things? i also cant find those disks so if its possible to do it without them that would be ideal.

thanks

Have you tried picking the drivers direct from Dell Support Site?

it didnt work. i tried the sound driver and installed it and after it made me restart my computer it wanted me to install more and it couldn't configure for my computer.

is there something else i need to install first?

Chipset and processor drivers, if they exist, are the ones I would install first. Regarding your sound, might want first to update Windows.

Well it looks like you were taken to the wrong page. You have a Dell Inspiron 9300 but the link i clicked on took me to the 9400 page

http://support.dell.com/support/down...NSPIRON%209300

These are the drivers you need.

i noticed that but still haven't had any luck... i tried installing the chipset drivers. i couldn't find any processor drivers.

Not sure you should need processor drivers unless your referring to the Video Card. but these are typically the ones you need.

Chipset drivers
GPU Drivers - Do you know what card is installed ?
Sound Drivers
Network Drivers
Wireless Card
Modem (if installed)
Dell Notebook System Software

Last once to get the drivers figured out and working I would suggest you make a slipstreamed XP CD, which can be done using a free utility called nTune,

basically it will take your Dell XP Cd and create an ISO, from there you can add the drivers for your 9300 to the ISO file and create a XP CD that has all the drivers already included in the windows installation process so you basically just install, and go.

have you tried using headphones to verify if the sounds works there

also in Control panel, System, hardware Devices > Does the sound device have any errors listed ?

when i put headphones in the jack i couldnt hear anything at first. i jiggled the jack around and got some sound to cut in. could this have to do with my laptop speakers?

did you mean device manager? i looked there and saw several sound devices i installed. which i think i got on there trying to get my sound to work. they all say they're working properly though.

It could be that the output jack needs to be replaced, or some loose wires behind it. Time to open the comp up I am afraid.

yes I second that...it looks like your headphone jack could be the problem.

If its not working proprly the sound would be cut off from the internal speakers and may or may not work on the headphones

The headphone jack is designed to turnoff the internal speakers when phones are plugged in, then connect them again when you remove the phone jack.

thats a pain in the ass

is this something i might be able to fix or something that would require a professional?

thereare two issues

Finding the part

Soldering it n the board.

If you have some solderuing skills than I say go for it

But finding the audio jack can be a proglem,

You will have to open up the laptop and see if you can find a Part Number on it.
Then see if the part can be found.

I ma pretty sure this issue has been discussed here in the past, try searching this forum

Dell would just replace the entire board, but thats going to run you around $ 200.00 for a rebuilt board on Ebay
