Alienware M17x - personal experiences (?)

Hello all, I just pulled the trigger on a new m17x model and wanted to see what the experience was with folks that own the same model.

- How long did it actually take to ship?
- How's the actual Performance?
- Is noise that bad?
- How about heating?
- Are you happy with your purchase?

My Specs:
Space Black
Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad QX9300 (2/53Mhz, 12MB, 1066 FSB)
8GB DDR3 1333Mhz
17" Monitor 1200p
Dual Nvidia GForce GTX 280M (SLI)
2 x 256 Solid State Drive (not sure what brand) running RAID 0
Windows Ultimate 64 Bit
Slot-Load dual layer Blu-Ray Combo (reader, not BD burner)
1 Year Warranty (Maybe I should Upgrade)

I do own an ALX desktop system that I bought in 2004 and I have nothing but good things to say on my experience with my ALX.

Also are there any big time advantages on SSD in RAID 0 vs normal 7200 RPM in RAID 0?

SSD in Raid0 fliiiiiiiiiiiiies. It boots faster, battery life will be a tad longer and transfer rates are much higher.

Really? are there any benchmarks out there that compare SSD RAID 0 with lets say 7200 or 10000 RMP in RAID 0?

well hopefully i will be able to help you with the fan sound/heat question by the end of this week.

cant do any comparisons though as i didnt go the for the ssd in raid went with 7200 in RAID 0.

Mine took 18 days fom the day I ordered until the day I received it. I ordered it on June 8th which was less than a week after it was first available to be ordered. It may be delievered even quicker now.

The performance is EXCELLENT

What noise??

It does get warm in the back but nothing it cannot handle and a cooling pad reduces it quite nicely.

I am very happy.....but don't ask my wife how she fels about it

You will love it

Cooling pad? I don't think it's even necessary. It barely gets hot even after playing Crysis for a couple of hours.

Any guesses as to what kind of user-based periodic hardware maintenance will be needed in the future on the M17x? I'm speaking mostly of anti-dust measures. The M17x has only been out a couple of months, so any dust intake issues may not have revealed themselves yet.

I'm an owner of the Aurora m7700a (that just died after nearly 4wonderful years of hard use *cry*) and every couple of months I had to remove the CPU and GPU heat sinks and blow dust out of them. I swear sometimes I think they suck in the dust from the Sarhara Desert which is why we've had so few hurricanes in the Atlantic this year! Do you think the M17x will be subject to the same de-dusting requirement? How easy is it to get to the heat sinks and remove them?

I liken these high end machines to Ferraris. The performance is superb, but proper preventative care is a must!
