AMD vs. Intel laptops - intelligent and informed

Hey all,
So I ask you learned forum members for advice regarding the age-old question: AMD or Intel? The time has come to replace my old, crappy Toshiba A-75 that I bought new in 2004. I have done tons of research and shopping (both online and in-store) for a new laptop, and have narrowed it down to two:
HP Pavilion dv6-1268nr with AMD Turion X2 Ultra ZM-82
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...ct_id=11319358
Toshiba Satellite A505-S6965 with Intel (Centrino) Core 2 P7350
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=937155&type=product&id=1218093379440
Both appear to be great systems, and are practically the same (screen size, numeric keypad, expandable RAM, price, etc). There are pros and cons to each machine, though, and so I just wanted to share some thoughts with y'all. I will use the laptop for internet, movies, WP, and gaming. That said, here are some considerations:
Advantages of the HP:
--Better ATI video card, with more ded. memory (1GB vs. 512MB)
--Bigger FSB (3600 vs. 800-1066)
--Faster clocked processor (2.2 vs. 2.0)
--Supports "b" wireless
Advantages of the Toshiba:
--Bigger HDD (500GB vs. 320GB)
--Bigger L2 cache (3MB vs. 2 MB)
--Newer processor architecture, Intel generally clocks better
I have read much into the heat issues with AMD processors, including with this specific laptop. While I don't worry about the heat per se, I do worry about it affecting components in the future. The better video card on the HP sounds great, but I think the Toshiba will have better battery life with the Centrino chipset and maybe last longer down the road with a cooler-running processor.
The Intel seems to kick butt in the benchmarks I have seen, but will the AMD pull ahead here with the extra .2 Ghz, bigger FSB, and better GPU? I also have to say that I am hesitant and spiteful towards Toshiba since I have had SO many problems with my P.O.S. Satellite A-75. Hence, I am torn. For $800, which comp is the better deal, and which will still be running in a few years?
Anyone out there know about / have either system? Any thoughts / opinions?
Thanks!!

We have many threads/posts here regarding AMD and Intel, and specifically about theses 2 machines. I can understand your torn in between of the 2. Your observation regarding AMD and Intel machines are not far off.

With the latest AMD machines, combining with good ATI GPUs, plus the fact that I am an AMD fan, I'd say go for the AMD.

Owning and using both HPs and Toshibas, before and current, both brands are good to us. Get extra warranty whilst you are at it.

I preffer Intel, but in this case, I think AMD would be better (because of the GPU that comes with it).

But be careful, lately I've seen several Compaqs with severe heat issues. Since Compaq and HP use pretty much the same desings, you should do a little research about how good or bad is that HP model regarding to heat issues.

Cheers!

I agree with HP (Compaq) notebooks tend to be a bit more warmer with AMD models, but I never had one heating up to the point that I need to throw water over it

(sensing powerpack lurking somewhere about to pound me on this )

cheers ...

I was lurking saw this thread at work no time to respond and now I see this. Here comes the pounce.

OP said heat not an issue, I had only thought the AMD aspect had not even thought about the HP part yet.

Comparing these two is exactly why AMD is competitive. Call those CPU's equal. The HD4650m GPU crushes the 4500m HD IGP. Consider in 3DMark06 HD4650m about 6500 4500m HD about 750. Even if you don't trust 3DMark the difference is just too much.

Only person I would recommend the Intel in this comparison to. Would be someone who said they are obsessed with heat, will never game and are an Intel fanboy.

It is rare in most cases an HDD swings me, just too easy and cheap to upgrade. This is not an exception.

Oh and the AMD is $100 cheaper? Buy a HDD upgrade. This AMD crushes the Intel in overall performance potential. My last notebook was AMD, I bought because the overall performance and cost beat Intel. I still have it and still works fine. The CPU never had issues. OK except when I OC'd too much. But didn't damage.

But how about this? Sager NP2098. T6500 2.1Ghz CPU, 4GB's RAM, 320GB @7200 HDD and HD4650m. $817, you get Intel and HD4650m. I say that beats both? Oh and not an HP?

HP coupon(s)?

I recently tried to buy the HP HDX16t directly from HP with a coupon that someone gave me, but the coupon has expired. The coupon, NBS32924, was from HP and it was for $200 off. Does anyone else know any other coupons out there right now that would get this laptop down to $800 total? Any others out there right now?

Do not know of any right now but if time is not an issue they seem to come and go. Sadly at least in the past they used to be issued to meet sales goals. Like for the quarter and tomorrow starts a new quarter Q4/2009 so might not see for a while.
