$1500 or under gaming laptop for Quake Live? - Page 2

Any current notebook will out perform Mom's. You cannot spend too little as long as you get dual core CPU.

I would suggest you buy above your needs as Crysis is beautiful and BioShock or COD or COD4 also. For about a grand you could get good. But if you want $500/$600 you should have no problem.

Perhaps I should spend more on a laptop so I can play more games down the road. I have money but I don't want to spend more than $1500. So what is the best gaming laptop out there for $1500?

For ones you can touch the G51V is the best (BB). I know others but if you are not into I understand so do not want to push there.

Go to XoticPC.com. There are others like PowerNotebooks.com. They deal with very similar product not exactly the same. I know Xotic better. Look at the Force 3551 also the Sager NP2098 or if you want to stretch God forbid the Sager NP8662. All these machines are so far above what you asked for. But they are also about 10 times what you might expect. And all but the NP8662 are way in budget.

I narrowed it down to

Gateway - FX Edition Laptop with Intel® Centrino® 2 Processor Technology

Model: P-7805u

Asus - Laptop with Intel® Centrino® 2 Processor Technology - White/Black

Model: G51VX-RX05

Or one of gaming machines from

Down the wire with the screen size. If you prefer larger screen/resolution then take the Gateway. If not, go for one of those 15.6" from xOticPC.

Out of curiosity, why do you suggest the x0ticPc's over the Asus G51V? If I were to get an x0ticPc, which would be the best gaming machine for my $1500 budget? I don't mean to flip flop, but I am also considering the Macbook Pro (13-inch: 2.26GHz and 4gig of memory). I mentioned that I want to play games, but after I did some thinking, I'll probably be playing only one game. I looked at the games for Macs and I'm considering Quake 3 Live and Unreal Tournament 2004. Can I have an enjoyable gaming experience playing those on a Mac? (I won't be using bootcamp)

I know Macs are more expensive, but I do like that they are less likely to get infected by viruses. I go on porn sites quite frequently and I've been exposed to a virus because of it. I also get stupid error messages and the occasional blue screen of death, which really annoys me. If I buy a Macbook pro by next week, I can get a free Ipod Itouch. So that'll be cool, plus I do get a $100 off student discount and I can get a printer/copier/scanner for $20 after the $100 mail in rebate.

The offered prices at xOticPC are quite competitive comparing the one at BB - and better support for sure.

I do not see any issues with paying games on a macbook, having owned and used one myself for years. So if you are keen with a Mac, go for it. Check out the Apple Section here at NBF and get more inputs on macbook performance.

Well I talked to people on a Mac forum and someone said he got a virus on his laptop. A major reason why I was also considering a Mac is because I like watching porn and I know that increases my chance of getting my machine infected. I've decided that I'll limit my porn viewing to only a few sites and I'll get a PC. Having said that, what is the best gaming machine for $1500? I've been recommended a Dell XPS17 and the following:
Gateway - FX Edition Laptop with Intel® Centrino® 2 Processor Technology

Model: P-7805u

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1218043606827

Asus - Laptop with Intel® Centrino® 2 Processor Technology - White/Black

Model: G51VX-RX05

OK I must give you an "A" for honesty. The Mac virus advantage has been greatly reduced since they shifted to the Intel platform. And just a little history. In the past Macs only virus superiority was that so few users used them the bad guys just ignored them.

Tip do not click on executable files or pop ups instructing you to do things. No one has ever gotten a virus opening a JPG or mpeg.

You have picked the two value performance kings for 17" and 15". The Gateway and Asus. That said Xotic offers better. The main advantage is CPU. The two value have weak CPU's and low resolution. Those are their shortcomings. Xotic lets you address those two issues on theirs. That does not mean the value ones might not be best for you but consider that. Xotic lets you get better CPU and on some better resolution. The Force 3551 comes to mind.

CPU is the processor, right? If so, how is the Force's CPU better than the others? It is lower in GHZ. Also how does the Force 3351's graphics card compare to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M? Also why is CPU important for gaming?

What I dislike about the Force is that it does not come with an operating system. Isn't Windows 7 coming out real soon? If it is, I guess I can buy the laptop with no operating system and then buy Windows. With the Asus though, I would get a free Windows 7 upgrade. It also probably comes with Word already installed on it and a charger.

Switching to Intel hasn't reduced anything.

There are still no viruses for the Mac whatsoever.

There are a handful of trojan horses, but for them to even do anything you need to input your administrator password, otherwise they're quite harmless.

And, Classic Mac OS had viruses, so market share isn't a valid excuse for the fact that there are no viruses for Mac OS X. It's been out for almost 10 years now, the fact that it's lasted this long without a single virus is quite impressive.

OK so buy Macs. I don't know what I am talking about. Thousands of hackers have been trying to break Mac's given from God code but never have.

I would buy Mac as more secure and would save money say for example on AVG free.

OK Macs are better? What should I say? Fine M$ sucks but Mac is soooo insignificant?

I want to see an add. Buy a Mac almost no businesses use Mac so virus programmers ignore us? Hell of a sales pitch.

But that is it.

Owning and using Macs and Intels and AMDs for years, at work and at home, I can honestly agree about the Macs have not yet experienced any viruses attacks due to the built-in Administrator verification steps as mentioned by Pollisand and due to hackers not interesting in breaking Mac code as stated by powerpack.

Best lucks of both worlds !

For specific business in CAD and Advertising and Music usage Macs are well sought after, for gamers and other private power users (and many business users) an Intel or AMD is still the top choice.
