Inspiron 9400 - Video Card Just Died - Page 2

Hey all

I thought I would revive this thread. Money for me and my wife isn't as tight as it was, so I'm once again thinking about getting my laptop working again, or just getting a new one alltogether. Thing is, right now I am not going out alot where I need a laptop super often, so I am wondering if it makes financial sense to get a new Laptop, when my old one is still good, aside from the crippling video card problems of course.

Problem with that though is there does not seem to be any reasonably priced way to fix my current laptop. The 7800 Go's are ridiculously expensive, so unless I get lucky and maybe find someone on here willing to sell, I'm not sure what to do.

To see if I understand the previous posts about the various cards I could use, the 7900 series would be just as good, probably cheaper, and easy to install? Do I have that right?

I have a WXVGA with the 1920 resolution, which I love, and would obviously want a card capable of outputting that res.

Thanks and happy Holidays. =)

7900 series is easy to install yes. Cheaper? I doubt it, they are better cards. Also WUXGA is 1920 x 1200. All these video cards will easily drive WUXGA resolution.

Fixing the computer will probably run around $200 - $300 and you are not sure of the future. You could get a comparable refurbished laptop with a warranty for around $1000.

Oops WUXGA is the the one I meant, whatever it's called.

To repair my laptop, if I could keep it around $200, I could live with that.

For my own research, I have found for about $1000, I could get quite more than an a comparable laptop, it would be better in pretty much every way.

Hey all,

I was wondering something. I don't mean for this to sound shady if it does but does Dell allow you to get an extended warranty after the fact like in my case where something is already damaged?

I got a quote to extend my warranty and it's pretty much the same price as just getting a card. If they'd cover it, I'd think it would make more sense to extend my warranty and get it that way plus have the bonus of being covered again.

If Dell offers you the ability to extend your warranty then its almost always better to get your computer fixed that way as opposed to buying the part yourself. As for your part being already broken, I say so what; its Dell offering YOU the chance to extend the warranty. Are you already out of warranty or something?

Yeah. I've been out of Warranty since March. I hadn't
planned on renewing but I didnt expect my card to go out and I'm not ready for a new system yet.

I got a quote and it included a $100 reinstatement fee. I don't know if doing what I want is allowed. I guess if they're letting me do it at all that should be a sign.

But I'm like should I get it, then wait a few weeks and call about the problem... Or just call soon as I
pay for the warranty.

As a condition of providing an additional year of warranty on an older system after the original warranty period had expired, will require a Dell authorised service technician to examine the hardware. So, you really won't end up winning here, unless you can magically get your video card working when the Dell technician examines your system.

Time to revive a very old thread. My video card died again last night. sad.gif I found this old thread and didn't realize it had been over 2 years since it last happened. I'm way out of warranty again and although my laptop is quite up in years, I do need to revive it one more time if possible.

This will be the third video card I've had that's went out. I know it's the video card due to the graphical glitches and BSOD error messages referencing an nVidia Driver. But when I am able to get into windows, I randomly get a NMI error: Parity Check / Memory check. Is that a related video card error or does that mean something else is going out?

I heard there was a settlement about these video cards about a year ago but I guess i missed the boat on that. This morning was the first I heard of it. I need my laptop working so I am looking into replacing the card. I've always had the 7800 in there but I know there is a ATI x1400 as well. Do those cards have any issues?

Any help would be appreciated. I'm out of warranty so I am on my own.

I had completely forgot about that baking method, I might even try that. I was looking on eBay and a card can be had for about $99, which I'd be willing to spend. I never knew about the defect in these cards though and I think I long missed the settlement. sad.gif

I am mainly writing to confirm it is the video card. That parity check / memory check got me concerned it's something else. Like the RAM. I want to confirm it's hopefully not. One issue is enough!

Thanks.

I would go with the video card repair and replacement first. The error you have can be interpreted as a memory issue which can also go with the video card memory side.

I have the same XPS which I don't use anymore with that 6800 ultra.

I think we should exchange mails.

Any Video card from a XPS m1710, Precision M6300 will fit as a update for you, keep the unit free of dust and very cool by running a program like 18K fan control. Heat is building up inside and actually melting the solder from the video card. Here is an ebay sale for one unit closing very soon.

Original Dell M6300 NVidia Quadro FX 1600M 256MB Video Card GP041 0GP041 XF422

Good luck
