Looking for a quiet beast

My Z71v suddenly died and I need a new notebook to replace it.

I was planing on buying a new one in 3-4 months so Windows 7 would be out and possibly new notebooks with better cpu & gpu but I probably won't be able to wait now.

What I need:

Desktop replacement.
Screen size: 15" or more
Resolution: 1920 x 1200 (WUXGA) or 1680 x 1080 (WSXGA+)

Powerful enough to run current and upcoming games on medium/high, but since it will be my main computer, I also need it to be inaudible or very quiet when performing basic tasks like web surfing.

Battery life isn't important.
Preferably with a good touchpad.

Also, does anyone know a good device that would allow me to transfer my data from my old laptop PATA HDD?

Thanks in advance.

External HDD enclosure should work well for the PATA drive. Very cheap at NewEgg.

On system do you have a budget? And almost all performance notebooks should run quiet when not stressed. You see if the fans are running when not under much load if there is load not as much room to increase? So really fan is unlikely to even run when doing basic tasks.

For the budget, I was thinking something high 2k, low 3k, I but i won't discard a good laptop just because it's a bit more expensive.

What I'm looking for is a quiet laptop, not a "relatively quiet" laptop. I want something that will run all games I wanna play, yet wont bother me when I'm just checking walkthrough.

Others nice to have feature would be:
Doesn't run to hot.
A good touchpad.

What I don't care about:
Weight
Battery life

This laptop will be my main computer and I'm ready to pay for quality, but not sparkles and glitters.

NP5797. Get a Pxxx CPU to reduce thermal stress even more.

NP9850. Get with Pxxx CPU. 1 GPU would also further reduce themal stress. 18.4" form factor means larger size increases passive cooling capabilities.

My 14" with T9400 (35w vs 25w TDP) CPU does not run fans when doing basic tasks. My small form factor and same components, even hotter CPU indicates these larger ones should have greater passive cooling= no fans=no noise.

Very few systems will be able to meet the demand of near silent operation and heavy gaming rug especially in the 15 inch form factor. I would have suggested the machine im using the M4400 with the X1700 gpu however your requirement for a "good trackpad" throws the option out the window. You may have to give the sagers a shot or hop on older technology such as the aleinware 15x.

Thanks for the inputs guys.
I'll probably go with the NP5797 from xoticpc

With a Core 2 Duo P9700
+ Arctic Silver 5
+ Undervolt
+ Underclock
+ Silent mode
It will probably stay quiet
If not, I could probably add a notebook cooler (Zalman nc2000?)

Looking good. Contemplating/getting the cooler as the last resort is a cool.

cheers ...
