Fair deal? - Insurance company wants to Inspiron 9300 with Vostro 1720

Hi guys,

My Inspiron 9300 was stolen last week and the insurance company has offered to replace it "like-for-like" with a Vostro 1720.

My Inspiron (which I bought in October 2005) specs were something like this:

Windows XP
1.86Ghz Pentium M
17" WUXGA
2GB DDR2 533 Mhz
80GB 7200 rpm
256MB nVidia 6800 GeForce Go
Bluetooth

Cost: £1,290

The laptop that they've offered:

Windows Vista® Home Premium SP1
2048MB 800 MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
512 MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 9600M GS Graphic Card
250GB (7200rpm) SATA Hard Drive with Free Fall Sensor
Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Tray Load Drive including Software
Dell Wireless 1397 Mini Card (802.11 b/g)
Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth 2.0 Module for Windows Vista
Primary 6-cell 56 WHr Lithium Ion battery
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T5870 (2.0 GHz, 2 MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB)
17.0 inch Premium WUXGA TrueLife LCD

The specs seem an improvement in terms of hard drive and graphics card. Is this correct? Will it perform to the same levels as my old Inspiron 9300?

My main problem is how ugly the Vostro is compared to the Inspiron. Plus, if I go to the Dell website the total comes to around £500-£550 which is £700-800 less than what I paid. Granted it was 4 years ago, but I don't feel I am getting an equal replacement.

What do you think?

Unless it is specifically mentioned in your coverage that the same amount of money should be reimbursed, the insurer can choose to offer you a replacement of the same or better specs; regardless of what they have to pay out.

And specs-wise, the replacement is a good stepped up from your previous comp.

cheers ...

To OP looks like your insurance co. Is being more than fair. They will replace with far superior. I mean not even looking at depreciation. I mean unless your policy is replacement cost they are covering you well. If policy is replacement cost still doing good. What you paid for i is of no point here.

our notebook was worth less than $200 US dollars ( I am US). So anything above they offer is a gift to you. That said if the looks are objectionable to you. You could ask if they would make a cash settlement. O course at the Vostro price and let you shop on your own. Or if they could replace with similar cost Inspiron.

No they will not buy you a high end Clevo even if you paid that kind of cash in the past. Your systems value has depreciated so much.

Qhn no policy covers original cost of purchase as replacement cost is the closest but not the same. Notice replacement cost is 25% of OP's original cost. That is the best insurance would ever do.

Fair deal to me but if you had the option to be reimbursed via cash I would push for that route.

It would be what I would expect.... However - ask for one with windows7 - Vista is outdated now... Also ask for a better wifi card, all coming with 'n' as standard..(And yes it is better than your stolen one)...
