Well I took the plunge and ordered a M17X. Just the standard system except for the upgraded screen and blu-ray. I only got the 1 yr warranty at this point. Can I upgrade it later on or add more?

Good stuffs. I would go with many AW users here and recommend the extended 3 years warranty.

My 7700 ran for 4 yrs without a hitch and I let my wife use it for 2 weeks and she burned up the video card ... lol. I do however miss the Alienware phase game. This just "in production" thing sucks.

Maybe they can add "stages" to it ;-) like "in production - stage 1: parts ordering", "in production - stage 2: pay up part vendors" etc ....

You'll get it soon!

Ok it's been 10 days and still in production...so when can I realistically expect this thing to ship? It still says estimated delivery 10/2.

2 weeks yet before due date, and luckily, this has not been changed

cheers ...

I think the 3 year warranty is a complete waste of cash... In a year the computer becomes pretty much obsolete... There will be much better systems out next year, the tech is constantly changing.

I would never considered a laptop purchase an investment... It loses about 1/3 of the value the day you take it out of the box. 6-12 months later you'll be lucky to recoup 50% of the original cost, by that time it will be best to part with it and buy a new one.

I just feel that warranty is a complete waste of money...just my opinion. Unless you are completely clueless on how a computer functions inside... then maybe its worth it.

Sorry for the rant... Gratz on the purchase, looking at getting one myself here soon.

I would strongly argue that you take the warranty,

It protects your investment, The M17x warranty is with Dell and although they can be difficult in the end if you escalate the issues they usually sort everything out.

Many people have been upgraded to new systems and some more than once, in a few years they will prorbebly stopped making M17x and if it fails and the parts are not available.
This has happened alot to the high end gaming laptops.

inspiron and Xps m170 had problems with the graphics cards over heating, dell upgrade to the m1710.

m1710 had issues with graphic cards some people were upgraded to m1730.

M1730 had issues with graphics cards, motherboards and charginging issues and now people are being upgraded to M17x,

the point is Dell and Nvidia have been having problems over heating and card failours, the M17x is Dell built and powered by Nvidia cards.

Buying the warranty could in the long run prove a very sound investment and may if history repeats it self mean you get the latest system down the line if your system breaks and is not repairable.

I think the warranty is the most important and best thing in buying Dell sorry Alien ware now

If hardware is going to fail, it will usually fail in the first year. A 3 year warranty is a waste of cash, straight out. Just for the fact that you pay for 3 but you actually only get 2 since you're pretty much always guaranteed the first year with any manufacture.

Also, just because more people have reported issues with Dell does not mean that you will have issues with yours. I mean cmon, it is completely random and per occurrence on who has issues. Otherwise why would you even consider buying from Dell if you were guaranteed to have issues and hardware failures?! People seriously, stop being a slave, and learn!

If you cant just pay cash to replace a laptop after it dies then you need to get an extended warranty that is the philosophy that I live with... at 3K laptop needs all the protection because if you keep it for awhile and not for one year then if something goes out it will cost you more money and laptops are not fun to take apart and fix... its not a desktop....
