Choosing a new laptop hard drive . . .

I need a new hard drive for my almost-new Dell XPS M1530, so I look at the reviews, pick one of the "best," and then google that make and model to come up with complaints about the faulty PC board, overheating issues, whatever. I have not found one HD yet that doesn't have lots of failure issues logged.

The Seagate drive that failed in this laptop is now famous for its error code 0141, so I don't want another one from Dell, even if it is free under warranty. Any suggestions? Isn't there a 2.5", 7200 rpm, SATA drive out there that's dependable?

OP what product are you aware of without any failures? None right? People that experience problems are more likely to be vocal. That said you have already recognized that some Seagate's have risen to a higher level of failure. I do believe Seagate has remedied. But just pick one from a reputable mfg and vendor and all should be good.

The big three not in order are WD, Hitachi and Seagate. Fujitsu is well known and does have it's fans, good prices. Maxtor is a sub unit of Seagate. Many other off brands of the big boys. Not easy to set up a HDD MFG plant so kinda limits the number of players.

I like Hitachi and WD but that is 100% biased opinion I did have a Maxtor before they were Seagate and no issues.

Thanks, everyone, for the replies. Yeah, I'll go with WD, as I have never had a WD drive fail on me yet. It's just that there are a lot of issues with WD 7200 drives failing from overheating, but then I don't push my computers. My XPS has never gotten even close to alarmingly warm, and I do use it for some pretty intense photo-editing sessions. I undertand the part about people who experience problems are more likely to be vocal. But I do want to get rid of this Seagate drive that seems to be the culprit in too many error message 0141 issues. BTW, I just got another email from Dell and they said my new drive is on its way, and it will be a WD this time. They know about the issues with this drive and don't even challenge a failure claim. Gotta give Dell credit for that. I've been using their equipement for 20 years now and have never had a tech or warranty problem.

Thanks again for all the moral support and ideas!

OK, here goes an unabashed plug for my book, Affordable Paradise! Check it out, and then come join the other transplants from Chicago (seriously!) who thought it could only be a dream!

Aloha!
