Really weird audio crackling problem

This really weird crackling kind of skipping data thing has started happenning on my laptop. It happens whether I go through the laptop speakers or through my stereo which I have hooked up to the headphones jack. The stereo is fine becuase I can hook up a cd player to it without any problem. I've tried playing tracks with winamp and also windows media player and it happens on both. It happens if I play files that are on my harddrive or if I put a cd in the drive.

Has anyone had this problem or can you think of what it could possibly be?

What laptop

Which model do you have? And you never noticed this before?

Did you recently install Intel Application Accellerator?

Is your hard disk nearly full (even 40% full qualifies)

just give a more detailed description of the sound and answer the questions above and i'll try to help you - I think I know what you're talking about...

I've got a Sager 5620
40 GB HD (5400rpm)
512 RAM
2.4 pentium processor

It only happened a few days ago out of the blue. I haven't got that accelerator thing.
It sounds like when your cd player is busted and the tracks kind of skip a little bit of the song and crackle and then start playing again but this just keeps going on all sorts of different tracks. Or like when you copy a cd but the recording didn't work that well and all the data is a bit stuffed up or something.
I think I'm using about 11-12GB of my HD.

Solution

I ended up uninstallling the AC 97 audio driver. I now use the default windows xp driver and it seems to be working fine.

Huh, I have something that is close to the same thing. 8887, loud static when I start up, and it DID say on. This was only a "every-once-in-awhile" problem. I put the AUX sound on mute, now only get the start up static, goes away after the window start up audio. I have tried all the normal driver installs/deinstalls, and have done a windows repair install. No help yet.
