RCA to USB Video work

I found my old HI8 Video camera a while back & just found an Adpator at FRY's the will charge my old out dated batteries.

So I figure its time to start shooting some video again with it. on HI8.

But wonder what might be involved with pluging in my older video cameras RCA cables into my Mac & making it all download to my I-Movie or whatever I have to do?

Do I just plug it in with an adaptor & go?
Or do I need some sort of program?

You need a video capture interface. There are many out there, the basic stuff form Canopus and similar would work for what you need most likely, but take a look around and see what you can get.

Well when you moderate the A/V section of these forums, it becomes expected as well

But honestly I work professionally as an audio engineer/sound designer/system design consultant. Unfortunately video is secondary to that and not something I do professionally, only for my own portfolio, so I am not the greatest resource on this. That being said a former job of mine was teaching, teachers, how to capture and edit video for their classroom In those cases because we didn't need anything fancy, we tended to use consumer units like the Canopus I mentioned above.

By the way, going off memory the Hi-8 only had composite video output, or possibly S-Video, is that correct or do you have component as well?

S-video is much better for capturing video. Make sure you pick a USB capture device that has S-video input.

Alternatively, there are Hi-8 cameras that also sport a Firewire port, making transfers much more easier.

My Camera has only RCA outlets....
Its an old RICOH HI8 Camera.
