Intro

Ordered Area-51 M15X for gaming, internet, entertainment and school

What's in the Box:

Bought standard build unit without any bells or whistles.

Design

The Alienware is a sharp and robust looking unit.

Screen:

Screen is good for indoor viewing.

Keyboard

Keyboard is fine.

Touchpad

Bought aftermarket mouse.

Features:

LEDS

The LED indicators and backlit keyboard are cool, when they work.

Input and Output Ports

Ports are well located on both sides.

Webcam Pictures

Webcam quality is fine, works for intended use.

Size and Weight

Size is a bit big for standard laptop backpacks. Weight is heavier too, but there is more power than most laptops.

Battery Life

Don't be surprised if you have to reboot after unit goes into sleep mode.

Pros: Great Gaming Laptop
Cons: Horrible Customer Service, lack of solid information, bad information.

Conclusion:
Alienware Customer Service is a joke... nothing but lies, guesses, and broken promises:
Order for Area-51 M15X laptop placed 5/27/09 showed schedule to ship 6/1.
Immediately rescheduled to 6/3 as soon as the order was accepted.
Actually shipped 6/8/09.
After reloading operating system 3 times and hourly reboots, internet connection problems, etc. Alienware finally authorized the return on 8/12/09. They advised it would take them up to 2 weeks to fix and return the unit.
On 9/8/09 they said the unit had been rebuilt twice yet they did not know when it could be expected to ship.
On 9/10/09 they promised a refund then said "no" on 9/11/09!
They never could provide status.
They couldn't transfer me to someone that could help.
They could not refund my money.
On a positive note, when I asked the customer service agent if he wanted negative things to be said about Alienware he responded "of course not" yet he was not interested in doing anything to improve the situation.
I spent $1,502.58 over 3-1/2 months ago and just recently got a laptop to use!
BUT - Alienware never upgraded the memory or extended the warranty as they had promised.
So the saga continues...

I know Dell is the parent company of Alienware, but they have separate customer service lines. Currently we have 2 Dell desktops, 1 Macbook and were trying to add this Alienware laptop. Dell customer service is not what it used to be but it is lightyears ahead of Alienware (no pun intended).

Some relevant statements. Missing the whole core of what a review is all about.

The major post is about reporting how bad Dell Support is and a bad product.

Refund?

on 9/10/09 I was allowed to speak with an Alienware/Dell supervisor who contacted the Alienware repair center and found out that they still could not fix the Area-51 computer and were running diagnostics again. He then offered to cancel the system and credit my Visa card (even though all agents I had talked to previously insisted they could not do refunds). But he actually submitted a cancellation ticket and another department will contact me but he does not know how long that will take but he thought it would be about 2 weeks. So it looks like I will get a refund, BUT I don't have any assurance yet. Still, on that faith, as I had originally stated I would, I ordered a different laptop from dell.com.
