USB Mouse problem on NEC VersaPro UltraLite Type VS

Hi Everyone,

Maybe someone can help me. I'm having problems with USB mice on this netbook - NEC VersaPro UltraLite Type VS (VJ18V/SA-7 VS UltraLite). This is an Intel Atom 1.86 GHz powered netbook with Intel GMA 500 graphics and a 64GB SSD.
The machine comes with a built in trackpoint and 3 USB ports.
It is running WinXP Pro SP3 and has the latest drivers.

For some reason I am not able to get any USB mice to work with the thing. I've tried a Logitech, the Apple Mighty Mouse and a Genius one. All 3 work elsewhere. Windows initially recognises them but they stop working after moving a few inches across the screen. The red light under the mouse stays ON.

I've tried disabling the track point in the BIOS and the same problem persists if I do that as well even with a non-functional track point.

Does anyone have any ideas what this could be?
Thanks :-)

Hi, Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I tried all 3 - alas with no success.

I also went into BIOS and made sure that the USB Legacy mode setting was turned ON. (Also tried with it OFF).

Have you tried re-installing the chipset driver, and the USB controller driver?

Hi, thanks for that-- actually no, I haven't.

What I also tried last night was to plug in a 4 port USB port adapter and the mouse works with it!!!

The mouse is recognised and works. What I found that now the Mouse appears with a Mouse icon in Control Panel. Before only the NEC trackpoint (NEC Pointing Device) had the "white mouse icon" in CP. The mouse connected directly to the USB port appeared as a HIB Device.

It seems to me there is a conflict with the Nec Pointing Device/trackpoint but if I use a USB 2.0 adapter - the mouse is again recognised and works 100%.

???

Thanks for the feedback. Agreed with the possibility of a conflict but it is strange that the USB hub, which is an extension of the USB port, works (???)

cheers ...
