Hey guys.

I just picked up a NEW laptop last week. It has Vista home premium installed (ordered win 7).

I have a major problem connecting to the net. I CAN connect perfectly at home with NO issues, but i CANNOT connect to ANY free public hot spots! No matter where i go publicly, I CANT connect to the net.

I have tried everything possible that comes to mind, but still all fails. I have an active connection but no web page activity. All my hardware and software is up to date.

Im totally lost on this one guys. any ideas how to fix this issue?

Thanks in advance!

Are you connecting wirelessly at home? Have you reviewed the Free HotSpots setup information?

Each hotspot should offer some sort of guide as how to connect to it. Have you checked it out?

What error codes and messages that you received when not being able to the hot-spots? I doubt that Vista has anything to do with this issue.

Can you link us to the hot-spot service in question? Or point us to where the set-up guide is for this hot-spot?

No set-up guide.

I know for a fact that 99.9% of all laptops can connect to this public hotspot usuing vista sp1 and sp2 (I work for the place of business with this hotspot). I'm that .1% that cannot connect. I have asked one of my co-workers to bring in there laptop to see there config... waiting on that.

I also have microsoft trouble shooting this issue with no results yet. I'm expecting another trouble shooting session tomorrow nite with them over the phone. I have also contacted HP concerning this issue. With ALL there trouble shooting, everything is ok on my end and all my hardware and software is just fine. Remember... I can connect wifi perfectly at home.

That IP address is different from what it is from your attachement. Maybe try to flush your DNS and then retry.

I found the problem, talk about right under my nose!...

Its BitDefender Total Security 09.

This issue has nothing to do with any firewall or anything else, but everything to do with the anti virus enabled. If I select aggressive or defalt, i cant connect to a public hot spot. If I select permissive, i CAN connect to a public hot spot.

Humm...

Im still figuring out all the exclusions and looked online for this sort of issue to fix but haven't found anything yet...

EDIT: ok this is weird...
After messing around with all the settings at 1st and seeing what works best, nothing worked except the permissive setting. after continue use at a public hot spot (about 30+ min), i placed all settings on default. Then closed the browser. Restarted the browser and BAM it works! I now have connectivity. Its like it configured itself ??? Well, we'll see if anything changes over time...
