HP Pavilion DV6120US: won't start... blank/black screen when turn on

Hello,
I'm more of a desktop user but my husband gave me this laptop on January 2007. Since then, I think I only used it for less than 20 hours (we don't have a wireless)... when we got out of town.

The last time I used it, about a year ago, it turned off by itself. I tried to use it again when I got home but the screen is just blank whenever I turn it on. What could be the problem? I don't think it's a good idea to send it for repair to HP as the warranty expired already.

BTW, when I turn it on, all the blue lights turn on... but the screen won't therefore I can't use it. Ealier, I hooked up an external monitor but didn't work. Could it be an LCD problem?

The notebook doesn't have any scratch or whatsoever. It still looks like new, yet not working. Please help.

Thanks!

NOTE: I'm not a computer expert... though I used to upgrade my old PC's (i.e. ram, optical drives, etc.), I've never checked any laptop inside parts. Thank you.

You mentioned that an external monitor was being hooked up. Did you toggle the FN combo key to switch displays?

If it has been sitting for a long period of tiem, you might want to remove the battery and just use the external power.

cheers ...

i have the same problem, with my dv6109 it just wont boot, but the blue lights, POWER and AC remain lit. in the troubleshooting steps in the hp site said that i have to look how many times does the caps lock light blink, but it doesn't blink in fact if i press on it, it does nothing, the screen does not turn on. The last thing i was doing was that i was reinstalling the QuickPlay under windows, after it finished it asked for a restart so i did, after the restart the issues began.

Any ideas anyone.

Thanks so much for your reply qhn.

When the LCD quit working, I was online in a hotel... All of a sudden, the LCD turned black though everything was on (i.e. the blue lights). After charging the battery, and tried using the external power as well, the problem still exists... blank LCD.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is/where can I find the FN combo key?

Thanks so much again.

The FN key is located just besides the start key between ctrl and Alt, take a close look and it says FN

It's probably Fn+F4 to change external/internal screen.

There is a known hardware issue with these laptops and HP/Compaq have an "Enhanced Warranty" program for these models. See this post http://www.notebookforums.com/showth...esario+v6101us for details about contacting HP for help, your system may still be covered under warranty. Simply contact HP at 1-866-671-7362 and have your serial number available, they will check and inform you of your laptop's status. I have a Presario V6101us that is no longer eligible for the free repair. See the Compaq page here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...262036&lang=en for specific information and instructions. Good Luck!!

Hi all,

I just re-hook an external monitor and it still wouldn't turn on. I tried pressing FN, FN + F3, F3, etc. but nothing happened.

Thanks so much for the link tjgunner and everybody.

I'll be leaving end of this month and would like to take this laptop with me, merely to store my photos and videos for the trip. I'm starting to lose hope that its problem is fixable.

Hi again,

I just talked to the HP representative, and was told that my unit is not included in their program. P/N RG360UA )product number) is not in the list. sighhhhhh

I asked them what could be the problem and I was told it could be a system problem... cost is $398. So disappointing.

system problem???

Hi again all,

Please excuse me for my stupidity... per HP's technical support advise, my notebook got a system problem. Does that mean it's the motherboard or processor?

Thanks a bunch.

There is a B.G.A. chip that failed. It is repairable...
