bad lcd or inverter board?

Thread Starter
The computer turns on and I see the same image (sort of distorted) about 6 times

What could be the cause of this? Inverter or bad lcd?

I might even guess the Video cable from the GPU to the LCD try re-seating it see if it changes anything.

I plugged in an external crt and that has a bad image.. lines and it's pink.

still think it's the cab le?

nope, more likely the GPU itself. If it was a LCD, Cable or inverter issue it would still be OK on an external monitor.

Could be corrupted drivers so easier to start with that.

Try booting in safe mode see what happens

Try removing and installing updated drivers

Does running an Battery Vs AC make any difference ?

Still under warranty ?

What model of laptop we talking aout here ?

Like Dave said it looks like the GPU is failing. What laptop/GPU is it?

While it already shows in the boot screen i'd say hardware related. But not inverter or backlight.

Reseat video cables and try reseating the GPU if that's possible.

I'm going with GPU difficulties on this one. I've seen that same issue crop up on calls where I would be sent out to replace a video card.
