USB Video Card - Replace broken internal card?

My laptop's gfx card burned out and a replacement part doesn't exist [laptop is too old].

The laptop can boot up if I remove the gfx card, so I know everything else works.

I want to gift the laptop as a "desktop" to my father. I'm thinking of buying a USB video card such as this one.

I don't care about the performance since it will only be used for web browsing and no videos over Youtube HD's resolution will be played.

However, my only hesitation is that the USB gfx card won't post anything to a monitor until I install some software/drivers, which would be hard to do without video output.

I think that IOGEAR thing is to add support for dual monitor and not to replace a gpu...

If the broken laptop is the one in your sig, you can still buy a replacement card from the asus shop:

holy crap! That laptop model was gone last time I checked that website!

wooooaaaaaahhhh
and it's affordable too!

hmmm now the test, to see if they still have it in stock

but thanks man, you saved me a lot of problems and saved my laptop. A USB gfx card would cost me 90$ [for 1680x1050 capability], and the replacement card would cost just a bit more, but make my laptop a LAPTOP again.

thank you infinitively.

I was THIS close to buy the USB card, since I managed to get VNC remote access to the laptop.

I'm so sorry to see your Z71V is dead. Im guessing the motherboard fried? [happened to me when it was still worth it to buy the replacement mobo].

It's an amazing laptop. Even today it kicks ass for work/university if properly tweaked.
