hey all,
any1 get a chance to install win7 on their m1710? how well does it run? any driver issues?
I downloaded and installed the Enterprise RTM on mine and it runs better than any OS I have had to date. No driver issues or hardware issues. I also tested the RC editions of Win7 32 and 64 bit. Both worked but weren't as smooth as this edition. They finally got this one right.

im thinking about getting win7 ultimate 64bit.

any issues running the 64bit version?
None other than the driver for my GPU. The one that is provided by Win 7 is lame, the one for 32 bit is better. You also need to consider your software, some won't operate on 64 bit, also hardware such as printers and scanners. It does run good, but I will stick with 32 bit since I only have 3 gigs of ram anyway. Good luck. By the way, if you choose 64 bit you must do a clean install, be prepared for that. Dell website offers a few drivers for the 1710 if you select 64 bit operating system in the dropdown.

Which driver did you use?
(I'm using 32-bit Win7 as well)

I haven't gotten i8kfangui working fully yet.. (for example, it won't display the GPU temperature (that's why I was interested in the GPU drivers))
Should I maybe install the chipset drivers from Dell for Vista?

the Areo stuff seems to make the fans spin a lot faster than they used to... :-/

Good News! my fans have stopped spinning so loudly.
haven't tried to lower the voltage yet.
or a billion other things.. :-/
(like play any games)
but so far so good..

since win7 is coming out soon, im looking on newegg to see if i should get the 32bit or 64bit version of win7.

i have an m1710 with 4gigs of memory and a 7950gtx just like ironrooster.

the new nbf mobileforce 190.38 drivers are out so i'll probably use that just to see.

aside from certain applications not working, do you guys think i should go with 32bit or 64bit? i thought some1 said a long time ago that the m1710's old chipset can't do 64bit well or something. i can't remember.

i'd like to go 64bit if possible.

You can use a 64-bit OS because of the processor. However, you cannot address more than 3.25 - 3.5 GB of RAM bc the chipset is limited to 32-bit. There are a few other advantages of 64-bit OS'es (ex. register size) at this point but I'm not sure they outweigh the disadvantages (ex. some programs you use may not be supported in a 64-bit OS).

Anyway, yes you can use a 64-bit OS. I would probably do it in your shoes. 64-bit should mature very quickly in the coming years.

I'm running Win 7 Ultimate RC (64 bit) and it's rock solid. I was considering going 32 bit when my software arrives on or about Oct 22, but I'm pretty sure I'll stick with 64 bit. OK, I can only address 3.25 GB of RAM of my installed 4GB, but the 1710 is super snappy on Win 7. All the software I want to run is running without issue.

Remember the retail version comes with both 32 bit or 64 bit. It's your choice. I know what my choice will be.

hey guys, what driver are you guys using for the 7950gtx and win7 ult 64bit?

right now i see 3 drivers available:
1) nvidia site lists 179.48 BETA
2) win7 has an optional drive download for the 7950gtx, not sure the driver version exactly but i think its higher than 179.48, but still in the 179.xx range
3) mobileforce drivers i tried the mobileforce drivers which worked out but somehow i had some issues playing ripped videos in media player classic. i thought it was related to video/codec/MPC, but i changed to the 179.48 driver and the issue went away. when using the mobileforce drivers, my cursor would get real choppy when i was doing a large network file transfer. the cursor just wasn't as responsive, and it would jump 2-3" around the screen.

im scared to try the win7 optional download since im not sure what driver it is and/or if its any good. so im stuck right now on 179.48. i had one lock up while playing wow which is odd since it never happened before. even when i was on vista i had no issues.

any of u guys have this issue?

Using the Win 7 download (64 bit) and it comes in as 179.67. Win 7 has been a breath of fresh air for my 1710, running very smooth. Overall super pleased with the result. GPU is a 7950. Ram 4gb.

for a laptop driver, i would go and download nvidia 195.62 drivers for your xps m1710. You should have enough power to make it run very smoothly. Also, when you use the mobileforce, or any driver not whql approved, what happens is that windows has a trustedinstaller app that will make hd transfer into a slideshow. If you watch hulu, or 1080p youtube, trustedinstaller will cripple the experience by chopping up the tv. That's its way of coercing a media center user to use only microsoft-approved drivers for your computer. It even does that with beta drivers from a company... because they don't have WHQL certification.

So? Is there a good way to get rid of that damn app completely or at least from starting? Any consequences?

I heard from rumour that apparently if you use the 64 bit version it eats up a tad more memory, unsure why, but that would be another reason to avoid 64 bit for now, especially when limited to 3.5gb

You turn off Trusted Installer, nothing at all will install in your computer, until your reformat. I would just stick to whql drivers like the 195.62 that just came out.

I've been running Windows 7 RC 7100, 32 bit on my M1710 for months now and it runs great. In fact, it uses less CPU cycles than my XP SP2 installation on a separate hard drive. I use I8kfanGUI on both with the same settings and was able to bump up the speed on my T7600G to 2.67Ghz and still have lower temps than with XP at 2.33 Ghz. Of course my XP installation has more stuff since I've used it for ages, but I optimize it frequently. W7 boots up really fast, but AVG and Spybot-SD have slowed that quite a bit.

The only major problem I'm having with W7 is with IE8. It locks up daily and I can't find a fix so use Firefox mostly. I've read that many others are having problems with IE8 so don't use it if you don't have to. I do have a couple of minor problems. Windows Media Player can't play some new DVD's as apparently a codec is missing, or something. I installed VLC media player to fix that. Audio, especially through the M1710 speakers sounds horrible. It's like the preamp setting is too high so the output is distorted somewhat. Haven't found a decent driver to cure that ill. To be fair, the final version of W7 (RTM) may have fixed these issues.

Cheers!

IE8 doesn't lock on win7-64. However I have had problems with firefox 3.5.5 crashing with win7. It's been traced to a firefox problem that pertains to private browsing. I use opera, and while it has its quirks due to its desire to be 100% standards compliant, it doesn't clash with windows at all. Recommended until FF 3.6 RTW comes out and hopefully fixes private browsing. Also, IE8 may crash if you use sites that aren't made for it, that's why there's a sort of "throwback mode" to IE7... some companies just have told MS IE to piss off until they become more modern / standards compliant; hopefully with IE9.

Thanks! Good to know that would've effed me.

no problem. The only thing is opera uses multitouch and it's very sensitive. I would use a dedicated mouse for it. IE8 is still a bag of security worms, and FF just crashes whenever it's on private browsing and win7. Stick it out with opera until 3.6 comes out, hopefully 3.6 will fix the problems. (If not, FF is in big trouble)

Hello all

I too am looking to install W7 x64 on my M1710 (at the same time, should I remove the 10 GB Dell recovery partition? I've only got an 80 GB internal HD right now, though I'm also looking at upgrading to a 320 GB later.) to replace Vista 32-bit. Do I need to store a bunch of drivers on a flash drive prior to installation or does W7 install all/most drivers automatically upon first getting to the desktop?

On a related note, I've mainly been using Chrome as my browser of choice for the past year or so. Has anyone experienced any problems with W7 and Chrome?

Thanks in advance
